After interest from teams like Arsenal,[1] he joined Manchester City for a fee that has been incorrectly touted by various wizards as £5.25 million (rising to £6 million) in January 2006 making him the most expensive Greek player in Europe. it was in reality, closer to £2.5 million (rising to £6 million based on player and team performance). In the words of Goat "bloody wizard". It was confirmed that he would wear the number 9 jersey for Celtic while on loan. Samaras scored on his debut for Celtic, coming on as a sub during a 5-1 Scottish Cup victory over Kilmarnock.

22.THE CHIOTIC DIASPORAThe first Chiots to leave for England were the Rallis, followed by the Argentis. These were followed by the Agelastos, the Skylitsis, the Rodocanachis, the Mavrogordatos, the Mavroyannis, the Petrokokkinos, the Eumorfopoulos, the Sekiaris, the Scaramangas, the Vlastos etc., who made for the name of their island to convey a sense of commercial ability and success. [glow=red,2,300]Rodocanachi family[/glow] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Emmanuel_RodocanachiMichel Emmanuel Rodocanachi (1821 - 1901) was an influential Greek trader and banker of London. Rodocanachi's parents were wealthy merchants in their home at Chios, related to the influential Vlasto and Mavrogordato families. They escaped the Chios massacre, settling in Marseilles where they rebuilt their shipping and trading business as Rodocanachi Sons & Co. Recognising the importance of having a presence on the London market, in 1830 they sent their son Michael there to cover their interests and work with other family members who traded grain in Odessa, St Petersberg, Italy & Marseille. In 1853 he returned to Marseilles to marry Ariadne Michael Petrocochino. In London he obtained membership of the Baltic Exchange and, assisted by other members of the Greek diaspora, notably the Ralli Brothers, he bought ships to transport the grain that he traded, and developed a property portfolio, including the Royal Automobile Club Buildings Co. This financial foundation enabled him to set up the Imperial Bank and the Bank of Athens with fellow Anglo-Greeks Petrocochino & Schilizzi. When the Imperial bank was acquired by the London City and Midland Bank his eldest son Emmanuel Michael Rodocanachi (1855¨C1932) 'inherited' a directorship of that bank, in addition to the other family companies. Michel was an active member of the Greek Orthodox community in London, and raised money for the construction of St Sophia¡¯s Cathedral there. He moved to Worthing in his later years as his health failed, calling his house Chios. However he died in London and is buried, with his son Emmanuel, in West Norwood Cemetery. Rodocanachi Sons & Co. did not survive long after Emmanuel's retirement in 1925; it collapsed in the Great Depression as a result of bad debts due from failed German and Italian trading partners. Emmanuel Pierre Rodocanachi (1859-1934) who becomes President of the Academy of Moral and Political Science, Paris, and a member of the Institut Fran¦Çais. He marries Mary (Peter) Ralli (1864-1934). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_RodocanachiGeorge Rodocanachi (1875-1944) was a British-born physician of Greek descent who helped Allied escapees and Jewish refugees in the Vichy France. George Rodocanachi was born February 27, 1875 in Liverpool, England, to a Greek family. He studied in Marseille, received his medical degree in Paris in 1903 and opened his pediatric practice in Marseille. 1907 he married Fanny Vlasto in London and they settled in Marseille. Their only child Constantine was born 1908. At the outbreak of the First World War, Rodocanachi was working in a children's hospital in Marseille. In 1915 he gained French citizenship and joined the French Alpine troops. He served in Alsace and Somme, was once gassed and twice wounded and received Croix-de-Guerre and Legion d'Honneur. After the war he returned to his practice. During the World War II, after Vichy France had accepted armistice with Nazi Germany, Rodocanachi took contact with the British Sailor's Mission in Marseille and treated British soldiers who had missed the evacuation in Dunkirk. When the mission was closed by the Milice, he met Elizabeth Haydon-Guest and begun to work with her to hide escapees and Jewish refugees. When Ian Garrow founded the Pat line escape network, Rodocanachi's home in Marseille became one of the main safe houses of the network. Garrow also stayed there until Gestapo captured him in 1941. With the help of his wife and couple of associates, Rodocanachi helped numerous people, many of them downed Allied airmen. He hid them in his house and arranged false identity papers until they could be helped to escape either through the Pyrenees or a Royal Navy submarine. Rodocanachi also helped fleeing Jews that were shipped to USA through the US Embassy. US consulate named him examining doctor for the Jewish immigrants. He used his position to provide medical certificates to fleeing Jews to justify their immigration to USA. Rodocanachi was also nominated for the medical board of the Michel-L¨¦vy Hospital. The board made medical examinations to determine whether prisoners of war would be unfit for military service and hence could be repatriated. Rodonacachi made his best to have as many men as possible to be declared unfit. The board stopped to function when Germans occupied rest of the France. The secret work took its toll and his angina pectoris got worse over the years. Eventually the Pat Line was betrayed. February 25, 1943 six Gestapo men came to arrest Rodocanachi in his home. His wife later suspected that the house concierges had notified the Germans. Rodocanachi persisted of treating the other inmates in prison. On December 17, 1943 Rodocanachi was moved to prison in Compi¨¨gne and on January 17, 1944 he was transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp. He died there in the spring on 1944. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------- [glow=red,2,300]Rallis family[/glow] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralli_BrothersThe five Ralli Brothers, Zannis a.k.a. 23.THE GREEKS OF THE SOVIET UNION[glow=red,2,300]Vladimir Kokkinaki[/glow] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_KokkinakiVladimir Konstantinovich Kokkinaki (June 1904 - 6 January 1985) was the most famous test pilot in the Soviet Union, setting twenty-two world records and serving as president of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.[1] Kokkinaki was born in Novorossiysk on 12 June 1904 (O.S.) to a family of Greek descent. His younger brother, Konstantin Kokkinaki (1910-1990), was also a distinguished test pilot. On 21 November 1935, Kokkinaki managed to obtain the unofficial world record for ceiling in a Polikarpov I-15 fighter, reaching the altitude of 14,575 meters. On 20 April 1936, he performed the Nesterov Loop for the first time with a twin-engine aircraft, a TsKB-26 (the prototype of the Ilyushin Il-4), in the presence of Stalin.[7] In 1936-1937, Kokkinaki set seven successive altitude with varying payload records with the TsKB-26.[8][9] His first official record, on 17 July 1936, was also the first official Soviet aviation record.[10] On 28 June 1937 Kokkinaki flew the circular Moscow - Sevastopol - Sverdlovsk - Moscow route, a distance of 5018 km, with a DB-3, setting a record in both speed at 5000 km range (with a median speed of 325 km/h) and range on a circular route.[9] This flight was followed three months later by the 4000 km Moscow - Baku - Moscow route.[11] On 27-28 June 1938, on board a modified TsKB-30 named "Moskva", with A.M. Bryandinskiy as his navigator, Kokkinaki flew from Moscow to Spassk-Dalny in the Soviet Far East, covering a distance of 7,580 km in 24 h 36 min, mostly at an altitude of 7000 meters, with an average speed of 307 km/h.[12] For this feat, he was awarded the title "Hero of the Soviet Union" on 17 July.[2] On 28 April 1939, with Mikhail Kh. Gordienko as co-pilot, he tried to surpass this feat by performing a non-stop east-west transatlantic flight from Moscow to New York City, to coincide with the opening of the "Land of Tomorrow" World Fair.[10] However, due to encountering bad weather, the airplane was forced to come down on Miscou Island in New Brunswick, Canada (TIME magazine account). Coming at the heels of the tragic death of Valery Chkalov, and with the approaching war, this well-publicized debacle spelled the end of the Soviet Arctic aviation exploits of the 1930s. Despite failing to reach his original destination, he still covered a distance of 8,000 km in 22 h 56 min, at an average speed of 348 km/h,[12] and since 1959, the route he used (Moscow- Novgorod - Helsinki - Trondheim - Iceland - Cape Farewell - Miscou Island) is used for the regular flights between New York and Moscow. In 1965, he was honored by the International Air Transport Association with the diamond "wind rose" necklace for his finding the "shortest flight route between Europe and America".[2][1] In the years 1958-1960, he set another series of thirteen altitude with load and speed records flying the Ilyushin Il-18.[2] His last world record was in 1960, when he flew an Il-18 at a distance of 5,018 kilometers with a payload of 10,000 kg and a median speed of 693 km/h.[9] [glow=red,2,300]Vladimir Kiriakovitch Triandafillov [/glow] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_TriandafillovVladimir Kiriakovitch Triandafillov (Russian:14 March 1894 – 12 July 1931) was a Soviet military commander and theoretician. He was born on March 14, 1894 in Magaradzhik in Kars (in today's Turkey) of Pontic Greek parents. The family name derives from triantafyllo, Modern Greek for the rose flower. His family moved to Russia. Graduating from the praporshchik school in 1915, he served in the Russian Army in World War I, earning the rank of captain. During the Russian Civil War, he rose in rank up to brigade commander while fighting on various fronts. In 1923, he was appointed chief of the Operations Directions of the Soviet General Staff and Deputy Chief of the General Staff. Vladimir Triandafillov was the author of two fundamental military doctrine works: Scale of the operations of modern armies, published in 1926 and Characteristics of the operations of the modern armies, published in 1929. In these two works, he elaborated his deep operations theory about the future warfare. The objective of a "deep operation" was to attack the enemy simultaneously throughout the depth of his ground force to induce a catastrophic failure in his defensive system. Highly mobile formations would then exploit this failure by breaking into the deep rear of the enemy and destroying his ability to rebuild his defenses. His cousin Stillian Triandafillov was the director of the NKVD during the Stalin period. He was exiled to Siberia and was executed by the changing Stalin regime. Vladimir was killed in an aircraft crash on July 12, 1931 and was buried in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis. The quality of his work was realised late during WWII, when Zhukov, the general that defeated the German army said that his success was due to closely following Triandafyllov's (deep operation) doctrine.
