Ireland Women’s basketball lost 15 point lead to Montenegro to lose 67-70
Played in Dublin last weekend, Ireland’s Senior Women suffered a cruel loss by just 1 three-pointer to Montenegro in front of a home crowd at the National Basketball Arena Dublin.
The Irish girls commanded the early stages of the match, and opened a 6 point gap to lead 22-16 at the end of the first quarter. Susan and Michelle Aspell continued to score well in the second quarter to extend Ireland’s lead to 10 points. Ireland led 35-28 at the mid-way break, Ireland’s Moran being top scorer and Montenegro’s Dubljevic maintaining the pressure and not letting the Irish gain too much of a lead.
Into the 3rd Quarter Ireland had opened a 15 point lead 52 to 37. Montenegro scored 6 in a row, 1 free throw and 1 basket for Ireland had the Irish at 55, while the gap closed again to 8, Montenegro on 47.
The Final Quarter – Ireland’s top scorer Moran on 22 points was sidelined with her fifth foul. Montenegro took advantage, clawed back the Irish lead, and 2 converted free throws gave Montenegro the lead entering the final minute and they held out to win 67 – 70. Irish Women’s Team coach Mark Scannell said afterwards that losing Susan Moran to a fifth foul was a serious blow. “We lost Susan at an awful time and unfortunately the game swung in their favour.” www.europeanirish.com/news_details.php?news_id=2192
