I've always found it interesting how some Albanians after many years, have not changed their surname to the orginal form. I understand Allbanians had these suffixes added to their last name without their consent at the time, but is there a reason why some keep these suffixes? Is it laziness on their part?

I know personally a family whos lastname is Ukic, they are from Presheva originally, the Vic or Ic is the result of serbianizing the last names process, just like in Russia they added Ov/Ova to almoust every single ethnic non-slav people there.

There are also a vast load of legal and time consuming complications. Paperwork after paperwork. My cousin married four years ago and I believe that it took around two years for everything to complete.

Actually, it is the aev/aeva ending that designates that the person comes from some former soviet republic.

Whats the problem if some Albanians doesn't have the surnames with a not Slavic suffix ? What about the Albanians who use Turkish surnames , did they are better because they don't use a Slavic suffix for they're surnames ? What about the proud Albanians of Italy , they have Italian surnames !

I guess some people here have issues with Slavs Only those Slavs who persecute us or/and try to change our names in an attempt to deny us our heritage and identity.

My impression of them from my University has been good. I only know two of them. The only Slavs i dont like are Fyromians and Serbs. They deserve everything coming to them. The rest (Croats,Bosniaks) i'm indifferent. Im indifferent because if they were a different religion they would be the same crap. As a matter of fact, i think Albanians should befriend Greeks in the Macedonia issue. And put an end to their ignorance.

Actually, in Montenegro, some Albanians who changed their suffix had problems about their properties ... so it's better to do nothing.

They call it Montenegro because autochtone alb-illyrians very long time named that place Mal i Zi and so others translated cerna gora (serbian) black mountain (english) montenegro (italian) ect...

I've also heard stories that Montenegrin authorities would tell Albanian immigrants that left abroad, they would not be able to return if they had their suffix dropped. Truth be told, my name is a bit Slavanized. From my part in Macedonia, Slavs would add a "J" after an "L" to all Albanian names. I.e. Vljora, Valjdet, Ljuan and so forth. I should get my name fixed hehehehe.

That is why a simple -s at the end of any last name is not so important... Add it or remove it whenever you like..

Actually, in Montenegro, some Albanians who changed their suffix had problems about their properties ... so it's better to do nothing. One guy from Vuthaj that I knew had this problem. His original family name ended in -aj, but the Yugoslavs changed it to -vic during the Yugoslav era. He changed it here in Sweden but faced alot of issues with the Montenegrin authorities when he visited home, alot of questions like "why did you change your surname, do you have smth to hide" etc. The bureaucratic complication involved down there is quite disturbing. Same with the Serbs. Other examples exist as well, like Bytyci which becomes Bitici, Syla which becomes Suljo and so on. This wasn't as bad as during the inter-war period when names were completely changed, like Kryeziu = Crnoglavic.
