Lot of green.... nice. I miss trees.... PS. Do you know that these type of architecture of houses (the second floor exceeds the first floor .. somehow like a balcony... but closed one) is the typical Macedonian architecture? Of course it can bemet in many spots of southern Balkans... but this where it started..

Is Berat under UNESCO protection? Also, the use of motorized vehicles should be severely banned.

Its very very oriental, with strong Persian influences, and even Chinese influences (low ceiling, wooden structure); alongside probably native influences. Its also very Islamic, particularly through the wooden craftwork.

Btw, has anyone visited the memorial to the WWII Italian Gramsci Battalion? It has a very nice view of the town within the fortification.

From Islam in the Balkans: During the Ottoman Empire the city was a very important center of the Albanian Bejtexhinje culture (Albanian poetry composed in the Arabic alphabet in a Persian-Arab Islamic style). It used to host competitions among poets that would become pretty heated.

lol ottoman architecture...did you take drugs? When the Turks arrived in Asia Minor they knew how to pitch a tent but they surely didnt know how to built such houses. Its clearly ante-ottoman architecture.

As I much as I hate the ottomans, that sort of architecture started during their reign.
