Hi, Ljuboten,
The information you are interested in is quite long and I am tool azy to write. I'll give you a link. Although it Bulgarian one, I think it is quite fair and there is no disinformation in it.

Bulgarian/Macedonian slavic tribes
----------------------------------------------------------------
There were many different bulgarian tribes before the 7th century. Let's say over ten. It's really hard to say from what regions did they come, because they lived in many, many places. The first historical source, speaking about bulgarians is armenian and is saying about bulgarians who live in Caucasus and have stone walls(which was something very surprising for the armenians).
The bulgarians originated from Asia and migrated to Europe.
About the language - there are not many words left from it. Here is an article, but it's in bulgarian -
members.tripod.com/~Groznijat/b_lang/bl_nasll.htmlThe most amazing fact about the protobulgarians is - they were never racists, nationalists or something like this. Many times they lived together with different people. Here, on the Balkans, the bulgarians of Asparuh united with the slavic tribes, who had different language and different religion, but still there is no historical source to tell something about fights between protobulgarians and slavs. They were fighting together against Byzants already in the 6th century. 200 years after Byzants recognized Bulgaria as a country (681), with the help of the scholars of Kiril and Methodi, the official bulgarian language became slavonic. The first slavonic books, which were liturgical books, were written on this language. Church slavonic = old bulgarian. The russian language developed on the basis of the church slavonic, that's why it's so close to ours.
The brother of Asparuh - Kuber - lead a large group of bulgarians to Macedonia and established cities. According to the latest archeological researches, made by macedonian archeologists, these lands were uninhabited at this time. Under the reign of Krum (803-814) large part of Macedonia became bulgarian.
The FYROMians come from exactly the same tribes as the bulgarians. They have nothing to do with Alexander.
The difference between western and eastern bulgarian dialects is not big. The people on the Black Sea coast understand completely the people who live near the serbian border. However, in the Rodopa - mountains for example there are some very hard for understanding dialects. It's actually much more difficult for me to understand the dialects of the pomacks, or the people in the Rodopa, than to understand the macedonians. The macedonian dialect is spoken mostly in the region of Pirin, but there are differences between the macedonian dialects too. All the people there call their language "the macedonian dialect of the bulgarian language".
There are absolutely no differences in mentality or in culture between the bulgarians. Even in FYROM the culture and the traditions remain bulgarian, but speaking about mentality they have adopted much from the serbians
I hope I answered your questions.

Thank you both very much! I appreciate you writing taking the time to write.
Very interesting. Do you know of any Bulgarian radio stations? I'd like to download it so I can hear the language.
Question how did the Bulgarians get their name? Is there any meaning behind it?
Even though I am a Srb from Serbian roots I believe 1) Macedonia should either change its name or 2) unify with Bulgaria.
Its unfortunate but Serbs don't care about us, yet Bulgarians I must admit have always cared about the people of Macedonia. We are more culturally the same in traditions and mentality....peacefull and hardworking peoples.
What part of Bulgaria/or city did the first slavic tribes come into?

For the radios you could check the links of the ones given on this website:
www.budilnik.com/although I personally didnt manage to turn them on but the problem might be in my PC anyway.

The name of the country is rather a Greek problem. We dont really care whether the name of this country would be Macedonia,FYROM,Vardarska or whatever. As for the unification, this is not really necessary. Everything the Macedonians should do is to stop flying in the sky imagining that they are descendants of an ancient empire and start realising that their country is new and stop being suspicious against us like we are their biggest enemies. Both Bulgaria and FYROM would benefit if they co-operate! However, when the Albanian terorists attacked Tetovo and the Bulgarian government offered help by sending troops, the FYROM government refused instantly. Do we then have to translate this in the way that we are a bigger threat to their country than the Albanians at the moment? I know that this is the position of the government and not of the people but it means that little has changed.

The name of Macedonia is not a problem. In fact, Bulgaria was the first country to recognise Republic Macedonia under it's official name. After all, this is what VMRO and all the other great people were fighting for.
But it turned out that the macedonians were not what we expected. In Bulgaria everybody views the macedonians as natural friends, every bulgarian knows and sings macedonian songs and so on. That's why the most bulgarians think that the macedonians are also with friendly attitude. Even today, with so much medias and the internet, we don't hear in Bulgaria about all the negativity and hatred of the macedonians. Of course it's not their fault, they were opressed and this is what they learn in school - that we steal their history, that we want to conquer them. That's not true - nobody in Bulgaria thinks of joining Macedonia. Actually many people are ready to help them in an eventuall conflict with the albanians.
If there's anything that Bulgaria wants from Macedonia - it's to respect our history.

Nobody knows. I like it this way
I read in one foreign (maybe russian) site, that on one ancient language, don't remember which one, "bulgha" means "to mix". The bulgarians mixed with really a lot of other tribes and people, but I don't think that they named themselves this way because they wanted to mix
