the Gorani are descended from local Slavs who converted to Islam during Ottoman times so they are likely most closely related to the Serbs

The Gorani live in Kosovo and they are indeed Serbs. They celebrate Slava and the majority identify with the Serbian roots.

Gorans: Sofia should protect us The Bulgarian institutions should urgently devise a plan for the protection of rights of the Bulgarians in Kosovo, demanded Zdenka Todorova, chairwoman of the Helsinki Committee of Bulgarians in Serbia, quoted by Darik Radio. She says that the Bulgarian minority in Kosovo - the Gorans want their representatives to take part in Kosovo government. The Bulgarians in Kosovo also want a culture and information centre to be established in the Gorani community's centre - Dragas. The main point is to raise the level of Bulgarian fluency among the Gorans so that they would be able to apply to Bulgarian universities. "The Bulgarians in the Western Outlands and from Gora were among the most affected Serbian citizens that suffered pressure after Kosovo declared independence," Zdenka said. Among other things the Bulgarians in Kosovo ask for facilitated procedures for obtaining Bulgarian citizenship, work visas and green cards for Bulgaria. www.standartnews.com/en/article.php?d=2008-03-31&article=20020

^ I don't think Gorans actually said that. If you read it, the statement is being made by a representative of the Bulgarians in Serbia not a Goran.
Not only that but she seem's to not know facts. For example:
No part of the western outlands are part of Kosovo. The western outlands border Bulgaria.
The last part implies this is only for passports to head west.
The Gorans recently decided to run as a seperate minority list in the Serb elections. Hopefully they get the 3,000 signatures needed and the 14,000 seats to take part in parliament.

They live in Kosovo, yet they do not speak serbian, and I though kosovo was the "heart of serbia" lol you greater-serbia serbs are hilarious This is known about Kosova/Kosovo: 1300 BC - Ancestors of the Albanians known as Illyrians dwell in Balkan peninsula.
6th century AD-Various groups of Slavs, settle in Balkans.
1180 AD-Stefan Nemanj formed the first united Serbian state.
1389 Battle of Kosovo Polje: Serbia is defeated by an Ottoman army. Serbian Nationalists have used this battle as a seat of anger towards the "Turks" and Muslims in the area.
1459 Kosova becomes a province of Ottoman Empire.
1912-13 Balkan War - Serbia conquers most of Kosova region.
1939- WWII - Kosova Albanians revolt against Serbian rule and join Albania.
1946-Allied powers (particularly Russia, France, and Britain) forcibly incorporate Kosova into Serbia. Kosova remains under the Serb dominated Kosova League of Communists.
1974-Limited autonomy granted to Kosova, after Albanians take over Kosova League of Communists-still part of Yugoslavia.
1987-Milosevic, then head of Serbian communist party, used anti-Albanian and extreme Serb nationalist rhetoric to come to power.
1990-Milosevic terminates autonomy of Kosova. Kosovar Albanian autonomous government is shut down. Civil rights of Kosovar Albanians denied as de-facto Serb military control Kosova.Wonder what we should say about the real ethnic origin of Gorani?!
