Bulgaria's Ruse Recognizes Ottoman Genocide over Bulgarians and Armenians17 April 2008, Thursday The Municipal Council of the northern Bulgarian city of Ruse approved Thursday a declaration denouncing the genocide carried out by the Ottoman Empire and later its Young Turks' government against its Armenian and Bulgarian population. The Bulgarian city of Ruse recognized officially the Ottoman genocide over Bulgarians and Armenians on Thursday. "With the adoption of this declaration, the city counselors proved their responsibility and their compassion to the universal human values, and demonstrated their civic consciousness and morals", announced the representatives of the nationalist Ataka party, which initiated the voting of the declaration. Ataka expressed its hope that similar declarations would be adopted by the city and town councils around the country. These declarations should be treated as a kind of referendum, with whose decisions the Bulgarian government and parliament would have to comply. The city of Burgas already approved a declaration recognizing the Armenian genocide at the end of February. This lead to a harsh reaction on part of the Turkish city of Edirne, which terminated all common projects, and severed all connections between the two cities. www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=92341

Janny, I have never enjoyed a post of yours so much so far ;D Great to see my municipal council issuing a declaration that follows historic truth, unlike the treacherous parliament we have.

Every time I'm in Bulgaria, I wonder why ppl do not react when their town and villages have so durty streets. Is that normal for them? I see some are cleaning their part of the trottoires and you make a remark - even their house looks in a good shape too. Town councils are dealing with political issues now in BG. But why do they not take in charge and make their municipalities look like it should? That's a very strange thing..

An official act of the government should be issued, stating that Rhezus (undoubtedly the wisest person ever born under Bulgarian sun) has to be appointed for a mayor of the bigger Bulgarian cities and towns for a period of just one month in each. I am absolutely certain that under his highly competent administration they will start flourishing even before the end of this month period.

Those ten thousands getting murdered in Chechenia and having gotten slaughtered in Bosnia should be a part of Ataka's views which are mainly based on compassion and human values, too. At least those nearly 2 million in Rwanda should be, since the victims were not Muslims.

It is that simple... Do what you have to do, in a proper way! Genocide issues are not for town councils to deal with. They have resposnsibilities towards its citizen, the social and infra structure of their towns. I wonder what's wrong.. can't they understand what the content of their responsibilities is?!

The thick heads in Parliament should realize that the Bulgarian people want this genocide recognized. Bulgaria Capital Sofia Recognizes Armenian Genocide on Remembrance Day24 April 2008, Thursday The City Council of the Bulgarian capital Sofia adopted a declaration on Thursday, the international day for remembering the Armenian Genocide, expressing its sympathy with the tragedy of the Armenian people during the repression carried out against it in the Ottoman Empire. The declaration states that the murder of 1,5 million Armenians and the mass expulsion of millions of others from their homes by the Ottomans was a proven historical fact. The city council spent a minute of silence remembering the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Thus, Sofia became the fourth Bulgarian city recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. The northeastern city of Silistra did so on April 17, and the city of Ruse accepted the same day a declaration condemning the genocide against both Armenians and Bulgarians by the Ottoman Turks. The city of Burgas was the first to recognize the Armenian Genocide in February. www.novinite.com/search_news.php

If I am not quite sure, but I think I read that Plovdiv city council was the first which reconized the genocide - in 2007, before the local elections.
