I recently read that there was actually a large colony of Serbs in Instabul. It began in 1521 with the fall of Belgrade and its numbers grew ever since. In fact, an entire area of Istanbul is still called "Belgrade". Unfortunately I don't know much more than this. Does anyone else here have any information on these people?

I know there is an area called the "Belgrade Forest" to the north of Istanbul . Its a popular retreat. the story behind its name is apparently this: "Arnavutköy's is not the only Ýstanbul place name that commemorates an immigrant population. The Belgrade Forest, for example, was named after the village of Belgrade where Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent resettled a group of men from what is now Serbia after capturing their home town of Belgrade in 1521. The men were given responsibility for maintaining the complex water system, with its many reservoirs and aqueducts, that supplied the city. Belgrade Village may be long gone now, but the forest name still commemorates their efforts" www.todayszaman.com/tz-web/detaylar.do?load=detay&link=176161I imagine there are many ppl who live in that area today who have some ancestry from those Serbians.
