doesn't matter what you think. They consider themselves as Turks.

i think the gagauz are descendants of the proto-bulgarians, who didnt get completely assimilated into speaking a slavic tongue like most bulgarians today do. now whether they are genetically turkic is a whole other issue, but they have retained their turkic language. genetically proto-bulgarians were i believe similar to those peoples who live in the northern caucasus, like the circassians, and chechens, but speaking with a turkic tongue.

Actually I ve read that the Gagauz in Greece think they are Greek. The protobulgar teory is just that: not proved teory. There are over 20 teories about the origin of the gagauz people.

they're antibulgarian and antiturk... but the majority i've seen on tv and internet look balkan slavs. They're not considered Greeks by anyone serious. i've read an overview about a book written by a Gagauz in Greece, and it is estimate that there are about 3-4 thousand Gagauzes in Greece, something more from 1200 families. They are mainly concetrated in 4 villages in Thrace in which live about 900 Gagauz families. They constitute the 0.0004 of Greece population... look at them: www.thourio.gr/manager/publish/cat_index_87.shtml
