I just checked it out
pirón fork - forchetta comes from Greek pirouni
Turks took it from italians, who took it from Greek
Thats why they say Piron and not Pirouni
200 greek words used: Please check them
I took it from a site I found kypris.com back in the day
200 GREEK WORDS USED BY TURKISH CYPRIOTS
KIBRISLI TURKLER'iN KULLANDIGI 200 RUMCA SOZCUK
The dictionary gives a Greek originated word in Turkish
pronounciation form, then gives the meanings in English and in
Turkish respectively, and finally gives the Greek word in Greek
form (so that it can be recognized by G/C's). Since the keyboard
doesn't possess most of the Greek letters, a key for the mapping of
the Latin letters to Greek letters will be given. Also, some hints
will be given for the G/C's to be able to read the Turkish form
(i.e. pronounciation) of the words.
A very important point is that, some words need not mean
the same for T/C's as they do for G/C's. For example, "hollo" used
by T/C's means "1.ghost. 2. idiot." to them. On the other hand, the
original Greek word "xo'los" means "lame; a person who is unable to
walk or talk properly". Therefore, please don't try to make comments
on the words' meanings in for Turkish Cypriots. However, if you make
comments on the original Greek forms of the words, you are welcome!..
Another point is that, although I used 1 book (about T/C
dialect) and 5 dictionaries (1 Eng-Gre--Gre-Eng, 1 Eng-Tur--Tur-Eng,
1 Eng-Eng, 2 Tur-Tur) so as to compile and translate the words. I
couldn't reach the original meanings or original Greek forms of some
words. Those type words, therefore, will be followed by a "(..?)".
For those words, one can assume that,
a) I couldn't find the word in the dictionary.
b) my dictionaries are not good enough (My Gre-Eng dictionary,
for example, is a very old and small one, with some pages missing).
c) the word is not used in Greece (The Gre-Eng dictionary was
published in Greece).
d) the word is over-misspelled by T/C's (or perhaps by me).
e) the word is not Greek.
I am looking forward for your comments on the non-found original
Greek forms of this type words.
Apart from the non-found word-forms in Greek, some words
were found out to be in close relation with some other Greek words
in the dictionary. Such words (i.e original Greek words in close
relation with the T/C use) will be preceded by three dots (...) and
its meaning will be given in parenthesis.
And here is the mapping of the Latin letters to the Greek
letters and the key for the pronounciation of the Turkish letters.
