Belgium Sends Back Asylum Seekers From Macedonia, Serbia

Belgium intends to begin sending back asylum seekers from Serbia and Macedonia this week. The first bus, carrying 44 passengers, left Brussels Wednesday.
Dominique Hernould from the Belgian Bureau for Foreigners told Macedonian daily Dnevnik that another 11 had requested transport back to their home country. More than 400 people from Serbia, and a similar number from Macedonia, requested asylum from Belgium this year.
"The first contingent of people who sought asylum in our country will be returned this week, and priority will be given to those who volunteer to return," Melchior Wathelet, Belgian Secretary of State for Immigration and Asylum said, speaking in the town of Bujanovac, Serbia on Tuesday.
Posters have been put up in the Bureau for Foreigners informing the Macedonian and Serbian asylum seekers that transport is available for their return, but it is not clear if or when all of those who sought asylum will return to their home country.
Wathelet, who along with Belgian Ambassador to Serbia Denise de Hauwere met with political leaders of ethnic Albanians in south Serbia, said that Belgium and other EU member states cannot provide political asylum to Serbian nationals.
Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme made similar remarks regarding Macedonian nationals during his visit to the country earlier this week.
"These people who tried to get political asylum in our country were manipulated," Wathelet said in Serbia.
Most of the asylum seekers from both Macedonia and Serbia were ethnic Albanians and Roma from impoverished areas in the south of Serbia and northern Macedonia.
Albanian leaders have said that the asylum seekers made the requests because of the poor economic, political and security situation in southern Serbia.
"People who return here should be provided with good living conditions and this can be achieved only with economic development in the region," the mayor of Bujanovac, Shaip Kamberi, said.
"Therefore we have proposed to our Belgian guests to initiate a donor meeting in which support for the economic development of the region could be secured,” he said.
According to the estimates of ethnic Albanian politicians, since the visa-free regime was put in force for Serbia on December 19, 2009, several thousand ethnic Albanians from Serbia have used the possibility to travel without visas to countries within the Schengen zone. About 400 of them requested political asylum in Belgium.
Bujanovac and Presevo, municipalities on the border with Kosovo and Macedonia, are among the least developed in Serbia. Both towns have high unemployment rates and the average wage is far lower than the state average of about 350 euros.
According to broadcaster B92, the Belgian ambassador agreed with political leaders from the south to visit the area on Wednesday.
"In the Bujanovac Hall of Culture, the ambassador is set to meet with mayors of Bujanovac and Presevo municipalities, Shaip Kamberi and Ragmi Mustafa, their associates and leaders of the ethnic Albanian parties, to discuss the asylum issue," Enis Salihu, the head of the cabinet of the mayor of Bujanovac, confirmed to Balkan Insight.

i dont understand why the EU is being so tough on ethnic albanian assylum seekers, when they are letting in hordes of uneducated, unskilled, uncivilised 3rd world sub-saharan africans into the EU.
albanians from what ive seen tend to be people who want to work, and are not content with living off social benefits, unlike these lazy ass africans.
albanians are europeans, and should be given full rights to settle in the EU without hassles.
even during the war in 99, the EU was not sympathetic to albanian refugees, and deported alot of them back.
my country australia was a classic egsample of having such a shameful heartless government in 99, when they hardly let any albanian refugees from kosovo settle in australia. this was during the time of the rightwing howard government, but even then they still let in so many useless africans.
