Something predatory inside us I guess.
Remember one guy with whom I grew up there in Montenegro. Nice shy guy and an excellent student but displayed some similarities with this guy. Always butt of yokes and later people never taking him that serious as a person (not exactly making fun of him but rather ignoring him). Ended up taking his own life.
It is not the gentlest society to grow up, not in the least.

Its a society where those perceived outside of the norm are not seen as normal and generally degraded. Even to this day my mother is obsessed with me being "normal", with "fitting in". Generally, in this culture everyone ranks you based on how you conform.
Its, in my opinion, a form of social control. These concepts, alongside "honor", "duty" etc. etc. are ways in which the village controls its members.
