With overall assets at £10m the Prime Minister of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic ranks 20th amongst the world's richest leaders. The British Independent, which had the ranking published, writes that his wealth is of a mysterious background.
Djukanovic is the only leader from the Balkans ranked amongst the world’s richest. His ranking has been widely discussed in the media all over the region.
The controversial politician has often been accused of involvement in tobacco smuggling in Montenegro during the 1990s. In 2003, the Italian Anti-Mafia Bureau’s request for his arrest was rejected due to the immunity provided by Djukanovic’s position of the Montenegro’s Prime Minister at the time.
Djukanovic himself has always denied the allegations.
The latest assessment of his wealth comes on a Montenegro’s national Independence Day, May 22.
Four years ago, when the citizens opted for the independence on a referendum, a comparison of tiny Montenegro with Monaco was often employed as a pro. So far in the economic terms Montenegro still didn’t get any close to Monaco – but its Prime Minister did manage to be listed along with Monaco’s Prince Albert on the list of world’s wealthiest leaders.
