Exactly, this is the root of blind-nationalism.

I think this is more than Nationalism. For some users of this forum, the past - in fact ancient - achievements are the main source of feeling special.
Self worth is achieved by thinking of the past.

Learning where one has come from, is normal. Learning where one is headed, is another story.

Its not who you were, or who you are today, it is all about who you will be in the future....

Well you need to know where you stand before you are able to choose a direction.

Not really, you yourself choose where to stand. The past shouldn't dictate today or your future. It is only background music to the film of your life...

The past should not dictate anything, you're right.
Yet, we should not forget where we came from, our past has made us who we are today. Identity, and experiences. Sure, we can stand wheverever we want, but if we are not sure where we stand, how do we know where to go?

Thats like saying adopted kids have no future, as they generally aren't aware of their past. Yet, they have a future right? same thing. I don't see how my past has affected me... really I stand for who I am today, when I think of myself and what I care about, what i want to achieve that gives me direction, I don't care about the past at all.

Your adoption analogy doesn’t make sense. Of course an adopted baby has a future, even if he doesn’t know where he came from. The baby will not know consciously, but his experiences and genetics have in fact shaped him to what he is presently.
You past life experiences have given you the knowledge you hold today and potentially for the rest of your life.
You didn’t just pop out of nowhere. You came from a root.

Yea, if we go by that theory, then we all have a collective consciousness, which will guide us anyway.
The point is "knowing" or not.... knowing our past plays a part in our lives, but only as big as you allow it to.
Whether our DNA knows it doesn't matter.

This is why it's important, not to waste energy on regret.

Regret is a wasted emotion. We all waste our emotions sometimes, yet, if we utilize them wisely most of the time we make up for the wastage.

It's very hard to block out certain emotions. Even though we can logically deduce their useless.
I guess its "Ego vs the Self'.

well,, Ego is essentially what has been enforced upon our being, so if we figure a way to rid ourselves of that....
Using visualization we can rid ourselves of this type of learnt emotion.

Certain techniques allow us to get rid of unwanted emotions, I have spoken to a couple of people who actually visualise that emotion as an object and then within their mind, pick it up and flick it away.
My mother always uses the saying "let the donkey kick it"
She means kick it outta your mind....
With training it works, although it can make u a colder person.

The greatest con that he (the ego) has ever pulled, was make you beleive that he (the ego) is you.

I forget the title, it was a british style film. And it was directly referring to the ego.
“The only real enemy to have ever existed, is an eternal one.”
—The Road to Suicide, pg 1, line 1
"There is something about yourself that you dont know. Something that you will deny even exists, until its too late to do anything about it. Its the only reason you get up in the morning. The only reason you suffer the s**tty p**, the blood, the sweat and the tears. This is because you want people to know how good, attractive, generous, funny, wild and clever you really are. Fear or revere me, but please, think Im special. We share an addiction. Were approval junkies. Were all in it for the slap on the back and the gold watch. The hip-hip-hoo-f**kin rah. Look at the clever boy with the badge, polishing his trophy. Shine on you crazy diamond, because were just monkeys wrapped in suits, begging for the approval of others." - Jake Green
