Who says the Azeri's are not Turks? The Azerbaijani winners of the Eurovision song contest held Turkeys flag through the whole competition. Bravo Ell and Nikki Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal of Ell/Nikki were voted Europe's favourites, after scoring 221 points with their love song, Running Scared.

Nobody said that. Quite the oposite, I have always stated that Azerbaijan is the biggest arse licker of Turkey. Just another example of that.

Yes, quite a few people said that, in fact many tried to argue that Azeri's were not Turks, but as we can see..... they certainly feel so.... Nikki did anyway

From all the songs I heard in this years Eurovision (which most were crap btw) , 2 of my favourites were this one and the Serbian one. Azeris today are Turkics by language and self identity and probably some genetics so I am happy to see them as Turkics but my understanding is a long time ago they were supposedly an Iranian people. One of Iran's most famous female singers "Googoosh" is an Azeri, majority of her songs are in Iranian but I think some in Azeri and even a few in Armenian. singing in Armenian singing in Azeri Turkish singing in Persian Who says the Azeri's are not Turks? I think its more accurate to say Azeri's are Turkic or Turk but not Turkish. Turk peoples inhabit many countries just like Scandanavian people inhabit several countries ( and always back eachother for the most part). I would say most Turkic people look to Turkey as a romodel since Turkey has had noteworthy history and is an important country in the world today. Turks ( Turkish) are the most recognized of the Turk peoples and other Turks look up to them.

I agree with this assessment. However, I was briefly with a Uyghur girl a while back.. and she identified herself as "Turkish". Though, I think that may have been because most people in Canada wouldn't know what Uyghur is exactly, so she probably identifies as "Turkish" to make it easier for people to understand what her ethnic belonging is, or is close to.

Everyone is free to identify as they wish, if an Azeri or Uygur or any other person of Turk background wishes to identify as Turkish they are free and welcome to, they are always welcome in Turkey. Since being Turkish is based not mainly on ethnicity, but more on mindframe and how they feel. Therefore anyone with any roots can say they feel Turkish

Sure but I think the Azeri people are proud of their country and wouldn't put another before it. They feel kinship with Turkey , naturally , they are not only Turks but Muslims as well. A non Turk country like Bosnia also feels kinship with Turkey - quite a few Bosniaks in particular look to your nation as their 'mother nation.' When Turkey beat Croatia in a soccer match the Bosniaks went crazy with Turkish flags chanting ' Turska je nasa majka' or ' Turkey is our mother.'

The singer said in her telephone interview live on Turkish tv "iki devlet, 1 millet" 2 countries, 1 people. Her view is that we are actually one with each other. Like I said, its just how she feels, I know a couple of Azeri's who say the same thing... I think its mainly the pro Iran, Iranian Azeri's who may feel differently.

Why would they want that? Turkey doesn't want such a thing!! There are lots of Turk states, Azerbaijan is one of them, but probably the closest to Turkey. They have their country and Turkey has theirs LOL We always support each other its nice that way....

Why would they want to unite? It's more UN Seats for the Turks this way.
I view them as a Serbia - Montenegro thing, or Greek Cypriots and Greece. One people, two countries.

But yeah they came to mostly the North West Province of Iran during the Ottoman Empire the Ismaili one I think so obviously they're Turks.
