Several thousand Bulgarians have rallied in Sofia in support of compulsory religious education in schools. Carrying flags and religious posters and symbols, they staged a procession on Friday from the capital's National Palace of Culture to the St. Alexander Nevsky cathedral, where Patriarch Maxim led a service. “A nation without morals is doomed” and “Church in school equals national revival”, read some of the posters held by demonstrators in the rally, organised by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.Bishop Neophyte, from the town of Ruse, said the introduction of religious classes was needed for the “better future of our children, considering the growing moral crisis”. Representatives of the church want religion to be studied in school as a mandatory discipline. Children can currently take religion as an optional class. Meanwhile, education minister Sergei Ignatov told reporters that, last year, about 20,000 students asked to study religion in school. Most of them studied Islam, while 3,000 showed interested in Orthodox Christianity, he said. He added: “In order to introduce religion in schools, we need a public discussion on the topic and have broad consent.” old.balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/30735/

This old sleepy nation is waking up. What does that mean for the region especially Macedonia? Can anyone else see NP and the gypsy street beggar beginning to worry?

In school, students should study the major religions as an academic subject, not as spiritual dogma.

17,000 students studied Islam and only 3,000 studied Orthodox Christianity. I think this is what Bulgarians should be concerned about. The growing influence of Islam amongst it's large muslim minority. The Macedonian minority is harmless compared to these guys.

Lol that really does seem like a likely scenario. Both strike me as soft individuals that can be easily "molded" into any form.

Hope it is not introduced as a mandatory subject, but only as optional one. Religion is the biggest pyramid game for money and power.

What this tataro-byzantine church says is irrelevant. Bulgarian will continue to sell their ass for a couple of bucks regardless...

Power is hidden behind the mask of religion. Yes, I agree the whole "anti-religion" movement is a sham. Why be "Anti" anything, it's easier to just ignore whatever it is, and not aknowledge its significance.

Why be anti-religion? Because it's destructive, manipulative, and hinders progress.

Being "ANTI" is as destructive.

It don't have to be. Anti in this case could mean spreading knowledge and disprove that which is not supported by science. It don't have to mean ridiculing people, discrimination and the like.
