Romanian riot police have fired tear gas during clashes with demonstrators protesting against austerity cuts in the capital, Bucharest. The rallies began in solidarity with a popular health official who had quit in protest against health care reforms.
But the protests have since widened to include general discontent with the government's policies.President Basescu later announced that he was scrapping the unpopular reform, but that has failed to soothe the demonstrators' anger, our correspondent says. He says they are now calling for Mr Basescu to resign and hold early elections www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-16565123Annitas... fill us in.

There's not so much to say. As always, in Romania, people are unhappy about things; and when they get the chance to show their displeasure, they'll take it. The original motive is not always relevant to the continuation of the discontent. The Romanian revolution started due to a disagreement over the status of a Hungarian priest, but soon enough it turned into something else. Here we have a bunch of people who dislike the president and the goverment; but whatever goverment would be in place, the people need to understand that the hardship they endure now would not go away just because they change goverments; and also, Romania needs to deal with its deficit. We can't become a new Greece. Western Europe barely wants to bail out countries like Greece. Romania is not so liked. We're not Portugal, Greece, or even Ireland. If we screw up, the EU will not have the support of its citizens to bail us out. I don't live in Romania, but from my staying in Bucharest for 3 months in 2010, I can understand that there is a part of Romanians who only see their reality of things. Also, the media in Romania is sort of pro-American and the analysts and the critics paint the US as the model country in contrast to our corruption. On the other side of the spectrum are the paranoid ones and the conspirators. Our intellectuals are often conservative who point their fingers to those that don't follow their ethical code and call it a degeneration of our culture; what they don't understand is that they're aiding in the destruction of the family by alienating those that were forced to choose a different lifestyle. We barely have any moderate intellectuals left. So you see, this is not only an economical issue, but also a cultural one. Maybe AofG will disagree. I'm sure his dislike for Basescu will form his opinion.

Nothing serious there, just some ultras of the Bucharest football teams who took advantage of the situation to settle the score with the gendarmes. Politics has nothing to do with it.

“We are f**king angry!”
Cine-s huliganii, cine-s nenorociții, cine a devastat centrul Bucureștiului?
Continuarea: vlad.ursulean.ro/

Some videos of what happened on 14 and 15.01.2012 in Bucharest for those interested. There are many high quality videos taken very close to the action. It kind of reminds me of SF movies set in a dystopian future. A sort of real Children of Men.
The evacuation of the protesters on the night of 14.01.2012:
And they promised they will be back next day...
And in the middle of action on both sides:
Enjoy!

There are different factions now (students, senior citizens), advertising the same slogan against Basescu. They filmed it well and to repeat what the blog you linked to mentioned, there are some whose anger is real. Having said it, it still seems to me that the vast majority of the protesters want to vent their frustation on the president on things that are beyond his control. Most protesters seem to be youths who want something worth fighting for.

I recognize that style:
Okay, so Basescu is not perfect, but at least he didn't betray the Romanian race (Iliescu in regards to Rep. of Moldova), nor is he corrupt as Nastase. As for Geoana, I'm not sure of him, but wasn't he kicked out of the party that Iliescu established? I suppose that's a good thing, but he was nonetheless a member there.

What do you disagree with? In regards to Iliescu, did he or did he not accept a reunion between Romania and Moldova, as proposen by then-president Mircea Snegur? Don't give me that poor excuse, that he was afraid of Russia and stuff. Russia was under Yeltsin and was in the deep shit.

What does Iliescu has to do with anything?
Can't you feel it?
The state of mind of the people, of the peaceful people? It is clear in this masterfully edited video of the events on the night of 14 january, a day before the violences.

Well, you can judge the party and its members by looking at its core members and its founders. That was what I was trying to say. I got nothing against Geoana. All I'm saying is that people tend to misinterpret some of the things that Basescu and Boc are saying. For instance, they've been saying that the Romanian must take more responsibility for his fate, become more enterpreneurial and not expect the goverment to look after him. The media took a shot at those statements, arguing that his job is to offer the people basic opportunities first. And that goes without saying, so it was unfair for the media to twist his words into a different meaning. Also, Basescu's policy on Moldova is perfect. The guy went out there and offered them what Iliescu had refused in the first place. Tell me what Romanian president has ever done this. In fact, all those belonging to the Social Democratic Party are servitile: their entire foreign policy was an act of cowardice. Basescu is a standup guy, he don't kiss ass. He condemned France and Germany for not accepting us in Schengen and he went pro-American where we had to profit. Okay, so he's a bit of a brute, so what? We had Constantinescu, who had good intentions and was cultivated; why didn't the opposition support him? As for these riots, there are similar riots in Slovenia and Hungary is experiencing a political conflict, too. This is not something unique to Romania. All these youngsters try to overdramatize everything, they think they're writing history or something. They ain't writing shyt. Yes, riot police are morons, you'll find the same brutality in more civilized countries. In Sweden, a guy almost died after being shot--and he possesed no threat to the police. The Romanian media is useless in offering a good assessment of the situation. Here's someone who knows what he's talking about: www.businessinsider.com/romania-riots-bucharest-eastern-europe-2012-1

People that are entrepreneurial didn't asked the government to look after them, they just want not to be robed although as the SME sector was practically obliterated by Boc government, out of stupidity but still..., that voice is becoming fainter and fainter.
How cynical can they be?
I think the statements of a ignorant lunatic shouldn't be analyzed in the first place.
All his foreign policy is a disaster which comes as no surprise. You cannot expect otherwise from an uncultivated „brute” with no talent or experience in diplomacy and even more, who doesn't take any advice. Or maybe we should count insulting the Dutch and the Russians as succesuri.
I think it was a complete „eşec”. „dă eşec of our polisi iz garanted”.
I presented those videos not to point to the Gendarmes who executed the orders which pitted them against the protesters, I just thought that by seeing them you could take the pulse of the street.
What Romanian media? Those are raw footage from the streets taken by independent journalists. I need no analysts, foreign or Romanian. I live here and I care; I don't need a neighbor to explain me what's happening in my house and why. Just listen to the voice of the street, it's always true.

Mai tin minte cand Constantinescu s-a adresat in senatul american, vorbing in engleza.

Dar in fine.
Daca crezi ca Basescu nu a facut a treaba buna in Ro, nu ar trebui sa-i iei apararea in fata unui strain.

Dar in fine. Un nou „must see”.
