Macedonians joined the communist ranks after the Comintern threw their support behind the Macedonian people and an independent Macedonia. It's no coincidence that it was in Macedonia under Serbian rule, that the communist party obtained the greatest support and electoral success. Macedonians however wanted a united and independent Macedonia, rather than a republic in Yugoslavia. We had to wait another 45 years before we gained independence though.
