Brunei’s Foreign Minister, Mohamed Bolkiah, has notified his Kosovan counterpart, Enver Hoxhaj, that his country has recognized the independence of Kosovo, the government in Pristina said on Wednesday.
Kosovo’s Foreign Ministry said that confirmation came in a letter sent to Hoxhaj, which is considered official recognition of Kosovo’s statehood.
The south-eastern Asian country is the 90th member of the United Nations to recognize Kosovo’s independence from Serbia in 2008. It joins 22 European Union member states, the United States and Canada.
Kosovo’s Foreign Ministry said that Hoxhaj has spoken by phone with Brunei’s Ambassador to the UN, Latif Tuha.
Kosovo declared independence on February 17, 2008, but four years on, the country still does not control all its territory. In the north Serbs control several municipalities and reject any institutional link with Pristina.
The other great unsolved diplomatic problem is Serbia's steadfast refusal to recognise what it still maintains is a province of Serbia - a point of view shared by its two key diplomatic allies, Russia and China.
In July 2010, the International Court of Justice found that Kosovo’s declaration of independence did not violate international law or UN Resolution 1244, the 1999 resolution that authorised the UN to take control of the territory. While the opinion was non-binding, it was widely seen as a victory for Kosovo.
