Ceremonial welcome for Patriarch Irinej in Zagreb

Serbian Patriarch Irinej and members of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), Bishop Irinej of Backa, Bishop Vasilije of Srem, and Bishop Jovan of Sumadija arrived Thursday on a three-day visit to Zagreb, where they got a ceremonial welcome.

In his address before the Church of the Holy Transfiguration, Metropolitan Jovan of Zagreb Ljubljana and all Italy expressed belief that this canonical visit is not only a historic one, but also a visit of peace and love.
The SPC delegation was welcomed by the eparchy's priesthood, and around a hundred believer, including Milorad Pupovac, president of the Serb National Council, and the staff of the Serbian Embassy in Zagreb headed by Ambassador Stanimir Vukicevic.
Pupovac told Tanjug that he is joyful about the Patriarch's visit. “Just like we welcomed Patriarch Pavle many years ago with joy, hope and great expectations on his first visit to Serbs in Croatia since the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the war in Croatia, it is with the same feelings that we greeted Patriarch Irinej on Thursday,” Pupovac said.
On Thursday afternoon, the SPC dignitaries will attend the opening of a new building of the Serbian Orthodox Secondary School Kantakuzina Katarina Brankovic, and a spiritual center on the Holy Spirit hill in western Zagreb. Patriarch Irinej and members of the SPC Synod will meet with Archbishop of Zagreb Cardinal Josip Bozanic and the Permanent Council of the Croatian Bishops' Conference, Croatian President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic.
On Saturday, Patriarch Irinej is to serve a liturgy and consecrate the St. Sava Chapel which is a part of the secondary school and the spiritual center on the Holy Spirit hill.
