20 JUN 12 / 15:53:34 Macedonians Like Croats - But Serbs Don't, Poll Shows
Of all Croatia's regional neighbours, Macedonians have the most positive opinion about Croats while Serbs are most negative, a recent research study shows.
Bojana Barlovac BIRN Belgrade
People from the former Yugoslavia perceive the Croats as cultured, hospitable, hard-working, but also as politicized, militant and distanced.
This is according to recent research by Zagreb political science professor Bozo Skoko on a sample of people from all former Yugoslav countries.
"When talking about Croatia's image in neighboring countries, it is on the one hand the sum of the impact of war in the past 70 years as well as the views created by media reporting in the last 10 or 20 years," Skoko told Deutsche Welle.
Therefore, people's first associations with Croatia are often with wartime events, followed by images of natural beauty, economic development, good roads and cultural heritage.
Macedonians have the most positive opinion of Croats in the region while Serbs have the most negative, the research shows.
Serbs think that Croats are genocidal, militant, politicized and distant. Serbs, Macedonians and Bosnians do not see Croatia as a model for EU integration.
However, all the former Yugoslavs, except Slovenians, see Croats as hard workers.
According to previous studies by the University, Croats have the highest opinions of Hungarians, Italians and Austrians.
They perceive Serbs as militant nationalists and as aggressive, and Bosniaks as religious, hospitable, conservative, funny, happy and traditionalist.

have you ever wondered what all Former-Yugoslavs think of Albanians? If we wanted Slavs to have a better image of us, we would have changed our traditions and language during the Yugoslavian period. Did we change them? No... You've changed them long before Yugoslavia.

My personal opinion: Croats: My people. But I don't like all of them. Some Croats tend to be stuck up ( almost like Slovenes - see my Slovene section) and think they are better than the rest. While Croatian admiration for our homeland and dedication to our own is one of our strengths it is also a burden when taken too far as such stubborness tends to lead to accepting some irrational conclusions. Overall though we are pretty awesome and have one of the most beautiful countries and cultures on the planet Slovenes : There is a bit of arrogance. However Slovenes are fun and very warm people despite the propaganda that circulates about them being cold like Germans. Depsite their ridiculous land dispute with Croatia they are very close to us and love hanging with us during the summers while we ski their beautiful mountains during the winter Bosniaks : Mixed bag. Bosniaks are generally really fun people. They used to be better than they are now but they were jaded due to the war. I do not like how Islamic they have become over the last few years. Mostar used to be a better city and its not worse because the bridge was destroyed but because the eastern half has become a Muslim haven of extremeism. Sad. Some are backstabbers too. Macedonians: I love you guys. You're awesome. That's about it. Serbs : Ah finally to you... What can I say? For me its a case by case basis. I dont really hang with you guys because I find a lot of you lack real honor. You'll pretend to be friends with your 'brother' Croats and go into 'Yugo mode' to find common ground with us but then when you're around fellow nationalist Serbs you don't mind singing songs about sending salad and making dead meat out of Croats. Croats do the same chit I know but most of us don't pretend to be 'Yugo' just to get on your 'good side' ( we of all the ex Yugo peoples miss Yugo the least) only to laugh when you turn your back. We prefer to have nothing to do with you guys or the ex Yugos in general and I think you guys mistakingly interpret that as arrogance.

Oh , and .... Albanians : Yeah you aren't 'Slavs' but you were a significant population in the same country back then. I don't know too many of you guys so I reserve a real opinion. Based on the bits I've seen I'm not overly impressed. Your Kosovo is ghetto and you live like Mexicans. Now I don't know if this is because it is in Albanian culture to want to live in poverty and filth or its because these conditions were forced upon you by Serbs or whoever. On the bright side you guys make awesome ice cream
