Exactly, you have sad melodies. The Greek Vlach song I gave sounds like the guy is feeling bad about his life. Its due to Ottoman repression. Old songs from Kosovo, Eastern Serbia, Bulgaria and Macedonia are sung in similar manner, its just the new versions are made so they sound more cheerful in the cases where its possible. Especially under SFRY. I mean check these masterpiece:

Sadly, I couldn't find similar old Yugoslav showcase of national dances for Serbia.

The first one is great Music. It could be Russian and be played in big theaters. Thats the big differences, Our vlah sadness is esoteric is not for outside consumption. We cannot sell our sadness to others. That's why we pretend to be something we are not , we are not proud of what we are, and I believe it goes much much older than the Turks.

But your sadness can be made a multi-instrument opera any time and with ease, you can add easily an orchestra and sell it upstream !!

WE NEVER managed to sell this to tourists.

Thats why tourists know only theodorakis and sytraki and zorba and of course CRETE....

I guess thats where my surprise comes from. Mainland Greek music is so unnoticed, and its not bad at all. Also, I wonder what would it sound with some more old school wind instrument. Clarinet makes it sound odd (for me).

I have never met TWO bands from different regions of ex-YU (ok besides Slovenians whose music is completely mehhhh) that cannot jam together.

however, in my home town, Cretans and Ipirots had a jam in a rather big open theater , and ended up playing in .... shifts .... they could not play not even a single song together .... for me, this means simply completely different nations.

those vlach tunes with flute (kaval) are beautiful and 99.9% identical to Albanian like all our music and dance is -its our spirit-.

you say sadness , yes it might sound sad but what it actually is ...is touching ones soul....happy music does also but it dissipates quickly while the sadness lingers and is more remembered and deeper touched ....makes the hair on my spine rise and maybe a tear or two

but then again it is also in tune with our common landscape and it's histories ,so one must be from the area to appreciated it or forgetaboutit ..as in the 2nd video..one just needs to close ones eyes and listen and then homesickness sets in

and throw all that saxon mumbo-jumbo in the rubbish bin

The music (and the albanian music as our my friend Rex will agree) seem out of place because this music came AFTER . This does not sound like Greek music (Crete, Pontos, Cyprus). This is clearly FAR ASIAN music brought by the newcomers.

this remotely has similar notes with a serbian scale, but not rythm. This is very popular also in all Vlah lands (all Greece)

The Native Americans, I have read, they are of Japanese (Korean?) stock, so this is normal.

I and other albs have been to many greek clubs /weddings and it usually sounds Balkanik and we can do the same steps within 2-3 minutes of fumbling ....but then again it varies on VILLAGE /AREA & Technique

(Fshat & Zanat/ chorio & zanat )

some areas are same especially from Pyrros's area ....and then the rest it changes bcs of new choreographed modern stuff

and then some transplanted stuff from the east

But when greeks in general come to our clubs /weddings they have no issues (mostly) dancing bcs its very basic and the base of old

I remember when I was younger(16) and at an alb wedding at a banquets place ,they had a greek wedding next door 1/3 of the greeks came over to ours and crashed the dance floor for a few hours ....yep old school vlachs ,,,,they heard the base/primative of Balkan music and it attracted them like magic
