Press freedom Romania's new centrist government yesterday vowed to end a system of controlling the press through selective state advertising, in an effort to improve the Balkan country's poor media freedom record. The EU and rights groups have attacked Romania's former ex-communist government for awarding state advertising mainly to friendly media and failing to protect reporters from attacks. «I'm committed to boosting press freedom. The current government has the political will not to control the media,» Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu told Parliament. (Reuters) www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/news/content.asp?aid=54074
