Just wondering does anybody know other Montenegrins who have represented other nations in a sport. I know of a few. Goran Ivanisevic[Croatia] Novak Djokovic[Serbia] Danko Lazovic[Serbia football] Jelena Jankovic[Serbia] Ognjen Backovic[Slovenia handaball] It seems we have a nack of supplying good sportsmen to our nieghbours, Serbia is very lucky especially to have such Patriotic Montenegrins in sport.

Goran Ivanisevic[Croatia] Croatian mother, Serbian (Montenegrin) father
Novak Djokovic[Serbia] Neither side of family is from Montenegro, even though Djokovic is a popular name. His mother is from Vinkovce (Croatia) whilst his fathers side are all from Kosovo (At least 3 generations). Djokovic speaks about this in an interview on Serbian television.
Jelena Jankovic[Serbia] Only her father is from Montenegro.
Probly the most famous one is thats former Basketballer..........Petrovic or something. His father was also Serb (Montenegrin) whilst his mother was Croatian.

The Djokovic family are from Niksic originally, just like mine!
Well done about Petrovic i forgot about him! And when you say only her or his father is Montengrin, thats good enough for me, that means they are Montenegrin.

"The Djokovic family are from Niksic originally, just like mine!"
Yeah but where were they from before that? Alot of shifting around in the Balkans ahahahaha.
I say this becaue I dont think Montenegro can take credit for Djokovic, whilst they can for the majority of the others. Djokovic certainly sees Serbia, Croatia and even Kosovo as more important to his family history then he does Montenegro. Hell even some of the Kuci tribe have only been labelled "Montenegrins" for 140 years........

Ill make it very clear.............If Montenegro had its true flag, its true anthem, its true identity etc, then I would definitly choose Montenegro. Hell I would even consider Muslims and Albanians as Montenegrins...........and we could all be Montenegrins together with our own United history. But that isnt the case.......and this new Montenegro is just a quasi state with an anti-Serb agenda. Todays Montenegro is not the Montenegro of Njegosh, of the Petrovici, of the Zetan state, the Crnjoevci. This Montenegro has nothing to do with the freedom loving Montenegrins who faught against the Turks, who liberated lands in the balkans.........who faught and died for Serbdom and Slav unity in two World Wars (Be they Pro Petrovic, Pro Karadjordjevic, Partizan or Cetnik). Hence if todays Montenegro has no link to its past...............I cant see myself being part of its present or its future

I hear what you saying totally, but being Montenegrin now, you are no longer really excepted in Serbia, they really resent what happened when Montenegro became independent, wether its right or wrong and i have noticed a lot of anomosity toward myself from Serbs[especially Croation and Bosnian Serbs], before when we were together they said, ohh crnogorci are the bravest serbs now since independence they say ohh Crnogorci they are all Albanian. Its very sad really that relations have got this bad!

Youre always accepted in Serbia if youre a Serb......be that Bosnian, Croatian or Montenegrin Serb. Thats the main point, if youre a Serb, then call yourself that. From 1945-2000 the majority of Serbs in Croatia, Bosna and Crna Gora called themselves "Yugoslavian" whilst our neighbours called themselves Muslims, Macedonians, Croatians etc. Now that Serbia has a state.............then all Serbs should call themselves Serbs. Why should we use a name like "Bosnian" or "Montenegrin" in a multi-cultural fashion, whilst the others use it as an ethnic term.
Theres a joke in Serbia that there are more people with links to Montenegro in Beograd then in the entire Montenegro........this is pretty much true. The vast majority of Montenegrins in Serbia call themselves Serbs, since today "Montenegrin" means something all-so different then what it once.

Youre always accepted in Serbia if youre a Serb......be that Bosnian, Croatian or Montenegrin Serb. What are you talking about. Montenegrins who favoured independence are treated badly by many Serbs in Serbia if they were pro-independence (they're called Shiqptars, never ind the fact that many pro-Serb Montenegrins voted for independence out of clear economic reasons). Also in Serbia, Bosnian & Croat Serbs are treated badly -- just look at how many people act to refugees. I especially find that such treatments of Serbs in Serbia is mostly present in Vojvodina & Beograd (I mean after independence I had to describe to many Serbs in those areas why despite being in favour of a union I would have supported the independence side). wrong. Majority from all nations called themselves what their nation was. At most 8% of the Yugoslav population called gthemselves Yugoslavs. The Serbs ubnlike the other nations identified with Yugoslavia, more then they did with the republic they lived in. Most Serbs do view themselves like that. A Serb from RS is more likely to identify with Serbia and the Serb nation then with the Bosnian state. The Montenegrin thing is different. Serbs and Montenegrin are one ethniciticity, two different nations. If a Montenegrin declares his nation to be Montenegrin, he is still a Serb. There is no need for a Montenegrin to call himself a Serb. The whole situation where some do and some don't is being used by politicians for their own interests and not for Montenegro's interests. Theres a joke in Serbia that there are more people with links to Montenegro in Beograd then in the entire Montenegro........this is pretty much true. The vast majority of Montenegrins in Serbia call themselves Serbs, since today "Montenegrin" means something all-so different then what it once.[/quote]

Novak Djokovic isn't a montenegrin, distant origin possibly, but he could never play for Montenegro nor claim pure Montenegrin ancestry.
Jankovic is not montenegrin whatever she is, she's a mutant.
Today's Montenegro is the true representative to the Historical Land of Montenegro, going back over 1000 years, with the Montenegrin Crnojevic Dynasty flag as the Symbol of the Country, and the ancient Slavic Montenegrin Language as official language of the Country.
And the People, the ethnic Montenegrins, the old slavo-illyrian Mountain race who preserved their distinct identity for over 1000 years, Oh how proud I am to hail from this magnificent country.
Long live the Montenegrin race and the sons of Montenegro, Realm of the Black Mountain.

None of them are Montenegrins. Just because one parent descends from Montenegro doesn't make you Montenegrin. The Balkans have seen a lot of population movements and Montenegro has been especially poor throughout history which has caused many to emigrate outside of it.
To claim someone as Montenegrin, I would require either growing up in Montenegro or at least having parents who are born and raised Montenegrins (so, despite the fact you grew up - for example - in Belgrade, you were heavily influenced by the Montenegrin mentality of your parents). Otherwise, you have nothing to do with Montenegro.

Pola Srbije takoreci predstavlja Crnu Goru (ukljucujuci i mene).

Deki, freedom to choose is still paramount to my (or any other) theory, so you can be whatever you want My situation is similar to yours. Neither me nor my father grew up in Montenegro. I was very proud of my Montenegrin roots, however, and I even emphasized them... until it all got too politicized with Milo Djukanovic, separatism and this national identity creation movement... now I, quite frankly, downplay any relation to Montenegrins (aside from the legacy of my surname)... I consider 'Montenegrin identity or culture' to be rather insignificant and banal, and incapable of 'surviving' past a couple of generations... certain things that are considered particularly Montenegrin, such as subjugation of women/an exaggerated sense of pride/emphasis on family identifications, I find primitive and backward more than anything else... those are just my opinions though... I have relatives in Montenegro, who declare themselves as Montenegrins and I love them anyway and I will always maintain close relations with them (I just refuse to consider myself anything other than Serbian and I find regionalistic identification to be backward... if I wasn't Serbian, I could only be Yugoslavian, or one day European... to particularlize things even more is unworldy IMO).

A lot of Montenegrins feel like you and i respect that totally, i think you have a lot to be proud of though having Montenegrin roots as well as i do, Montenegro was a banner for freedom for Serbia and Montenegro during the Ottoman occupation.
People like Terro give Montenegro a bad name, most of us all feel proud to be connected to Serbia one way or another.

Montenegrodeki - Dont be silly now Jankovic is not Montenegrin, sorry I dont relate myself to Serbia because there isnt anything for me to relate myself!! Besides yugoslavia I dont see any connections. And my father also was born in serbia! He's from a Montenegrin Colony in Vojvodina! But why did he always view himself as a ethnic Montenegrin? And his father before him who migrated to Serbia?? If I had direct family who came from serbia or somewhere there, then Yes I would claim Serb Ancestry, but why should I lie to myself, ALL of my family comes from Montenegro, thats the truth As I see it, If you can trace both of your family lines back to Montenegro, and you know how to speak Montenegrin, you can call yourself a Montenegrin, even moreso if your family roots come from Old Montenegro, which means you're the Purest of Montenegrins. Deki - I am not giving any sort of "bad name" for Montenegrins here, maybe the majority of people on here do not understand, but I was in Montenegro, and many agree with me there, and I could not have it anyother way. shonic - Nasa prava zastava Crnogorska
