A Greek-Cypriot smuggling suspect who died of a heart attack in Turkish-Cypriot custody had been beaten in detention, Cypriot state radio quoted a coroner as saying yesterday. State coroner Eleni Antoniou said she had established that Stephis Stephanou, 64, was the “victim of a beating” before his November 1 death in the Turkish-Cypriot sector of the divided capital, Nicosia, according to RIK radio. She did not say whether that contributed to the man’s death. Stephanou was a former Irish honorary consul and founding member of the co-ruling party DIKO. His body was brought to the Greek-Cypriot south on Saturday. An earlier autopsy by Turkish-Cypriot officials concluded that Stephanou had died of a heart attack and suffered cracked ribs during resuscitation attempts to save him. A doctor for the Stephanou family, Panos Stavrinos, disputes those findings, saying that the rib injuries were too low to be caused by resuscitation efforts, state radio said. Turkish-Cypriot media have reported allegations that Stephanou tried to steal valuable religious artifacts from a house in northern Nicosia. There has been no official response from the island’s internationally recognized Greek-Cypriot government but Stephanou’s family is treating his death as “suspicious.” The government requested through the United Nations that Stephanou’s body be handed back across the UN-patrolled ceasefire line for forensic examination. His friends said that Stephanou was only interested in saving Greek Orthodox icons plundered when Turkish troops invaded the island’s northern third after a Greek-Cypriot coup in 1974 aimed at uniting the island with Greece. www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_politics_100009_05/11/2007_89700

I wouldn't be surprised if the attack was done by Turks. They are a violent people without a conscious. By the way what are the Greek Orthodox icons doing in the Northern Turkish occupied area of the island? Its not like the Islamic Turks will have any real respect for them. Some violent and unconscious people who had been ruling your forefathers (and many others) for centuries? Sounds weird way of despising your self.

Yeh and what did they accomplish in those centuries ? Not much, and the "many others" will vouch for that.
At the end of the day, we all can just wait and see what happens with the next report.
Sounds weird way of despising your self.
Despising himself ? hes not the one that DOESNT look like a Mongol. You yourslef look like an Arab or Med most probably.
So whos despising themselves ? LoL wierdo.

Yeh and what did they accomplish in those centuries ? Not much, and the "many others" will vouch for that. If you say so. Why do you think that self despising has to be related to psychical appearance? For example, the Japanese and Koreans people are related to the Mongols. So, do you think that they should despise themselves too? If you are serious about what you say, then you must be the one who despises his/her self profoundly. PS: You do not know how I look like, so you should rather not speculate on issues you have no clue.

Sorry i am neither a Turk or a Mongol. You do not have to be sorry for that. This statement of yours only reflects how illiterate you are in relation to the Turks. No serious scientist claims such non-sense since "Turk" is an identity rather than some race. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Turks appeared in Eurasian steppes long before the Mongols, and the Byzantines used to see the Turks as the descendants of the Scythians. Similarly, the Russian, the Chinese, and the Persians did not see the Turks as the Mongols either. However, it is true that Turks assimilated the Mongols just like the way they assimilated the Europeans.

The Byzantines called the Turks 'Scythians' and among other things such as 'Persians'. Not that they where of course. Byzantine culture reflected upon the ancient Greek ways. It was there tradition to call any Asiatic people as 'Persians'. This does not mean your are not Mongoloid. "They appear not even to have known the names of foreign peoples, referring them hoplelessly outdated terms: the Turks were called 'Persians', the Normans 'Kelts'." From 'Byzantium and The Crusades' by Jonathan Harris Not true. East Romans knew the people surrendering their empire. They never mixed the Persians with the Turks. First time the name Turk heard in the Byzantine annals was in the 6th Century. Intestingly, Byzantines recoded the Turks as the "Gold Loving Nation" an ally against the Persians, and a partner in relation to trade with China. Byzantines even visited the Turkish Khan: The gold in Kaghan's tent was so impressive that Zemarchus, the first Byzantine emissary to Western Turks, made detailed description in his report (24). In 568 he met Sizabul Kaghan for three times. On the first occasion Sizabul sat in a two-wheeled gold chair; on the second occasion he sat in a carriage made of pure gold and many gold vessels were placed in his tent. The third meeting was held in a place with four gold-decorated wood pillars; Sizabul Kaghan again sat in a gold bed which was supported by four gold sculptures of peathingys. On the other side, numerous silver plates and silver animal sculptures were loaded in a big cart outside kaghan's tent. Judging from this first-hand report, gold vessels and furniture were placed within Kaghan's tent, while the silverwares, though very fine in Zemarchus' eyes, were only placed outside. Obviously, gold was always associated with kaghan's power. It is no wonder that the place that Sizabul Kaghan lived in was called "gold mountain" in Zemarchus' report.www.transoxiana.org/0106/lin-ying_turks_solidus.htmlWhat a joke.! Turks mixed with other people just like everybody else did, not more, not less. There is nothing despising here. That is what you seem be be mistaken. You do not have any evidence supporting your claims. Mongoloid features even exist in Slavic tribes. The problem is you can not envisage the vast Eurasian steppes that many tribes used to live in without having borders, unlike the borders existing in your mind. That is problematic situation for those people. There is nothing insulting about being a Turk, just like there is nothing insulting about being a Greek, Arab, Black, Hindu, Armenian, Russian, Jew, Mongol, and so on.
