DNA sheds light on MinoansCrete’s fabled Minoan civilization was built by people from Anatolia, according to a new study by Greek and foreign scientists that disputes an earlier theory that said the Minoans’ forefathers had come from Africa. The new study – a collaboration by experts in Greece, the USA, Canada, Russia and Turkey – drew its conclusions from the DNA analysis of 193 men from Crete and another 171 from former neolithic colonies in central and northern Greece. The results show that the country’s neolithic population came to Greece by sea from Anatolia – modern-day Iran, Iraq and Syria – and not from Africa as maintained by US scholar Martin Bernal. The DNA analysis indicates that the arrival of neolithic man in Greece from Anatolia coincided with the social and cultural upsurge that led to the birth of the Minoan civilization, Constantinos Triantafyllidis of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University told Kathimerini. “Until now we only had the archaeological evidence – now we have genetic data too and we can date the DNA,” he said. www.phantis.com/news/read.html?newsID=2008040375844

^^^ ball buster :-D
well the Ptolomy's were greek so i accept Africa. We also had Bactria empire ( albeit very short lived ). You have to understand that after Alexander everything became " hellenistic " even hindu ppl in India.
So, I think that we may have some mixed blood throughout the millenia but NOT to a point where our ancestors are completely wiped off our gene pool. And NOT to a point where you can classify the greeks as a " mixed " race. That would be inaccurate.

janissary
you referede to the studies of Arnais villena done in spain.......
but i guess it is your selective memory blackout that happens to every turk when they see they were wrong.
say whatever you want about Greeks and mixtures etc. thing is you have not enough proof for any of your claims

Exactly any mixture throughout Greece would have been minor. Many prominent Geneticist and Anthropologists have found a Genetic and Racial connection to our ancient forefathers.
Genetics - Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, Paolo Menozzi, and Alberto Piazza.
Racial - Aris Poulianos, Steve Coon and Angel J. Lawrence.
To Rex362-
Read it again it talks about Greece's Neolithic population so it would include the Pelasgians which by the way you have no connection to. The Pelasgians where a Greek tribe.

Turks think Cretans are Turkish. They also think Plato was a turk as well as...get this....ELVIS. Turks think Elvis presley was a Turk because he was part native American which they have this theory that Native Americans came from Anatolia lol.
They also think the pomaks aka muslims of Thrace are Turkish. They can fight that out with the Bulgars because they think the pomaks are Bulgarians.

I want to make such a dna test as well. Through a magazine I found this site... www.igenea.com/genealogie-dna-preise-ahnenforschung-16.htmIts a Swiss corporation, quite well known and popular with Germans, who want to make such a research on their origins. The result will show where relatives of yours by dna do live in the world and where your geographic origins are from. Further they will detect your Y-haplogroup (always inherited from the father) and the mtDNA-haplogroup (inherited from the mother). None can tell me such a test isnt seductive...although the result can be shocking as well...its kind of a surprise egg. ;D The advantage on such a test is that it spares you the exhausting searches in church registers etc...and it goes far more back than any other reasearch on ancestors can go. The biggest problem is the prize. 310 € for a reasearch on both mothers and fathers line. Thats a lot for a poor student like me.

I already asked my mother for some sponsorship....I must admit she wasnt very enthusiastic about the prize....but I think I will tenderize her...give me some days especially after I get my results from my exams of the last semester which will hopefully be good. ;D

There was a report here about such DNA tests. They say they are inconclusive. Many blacks took them and they were told even the specific tribe they were from. I forgot the specifics but the general thought was they were inconclusive.
