Croatian ambassador urges Kosovo compromise 31 October 2007 | 09:56 | Source: Beta BELGRADE -- Croatia's ambassador to Serbia says a negotiated solution for Kosovo is the best path to stability in the region.
It is not in Croatia’s interests for a crisis to be sparked in the region if no agreement is reached over Kosovo, says Tonèi Stanièiæ, adding that Croatia’s position is that no compromise can be reached.without the engagement of both sides.
“Compromise really is the best way to avoid problems. The question is to what extent will a compromise be reached, and to what extent will the international community impose a solution. Croatia will certainly act constructively and objectively in the UN Security Council, as it is not in her interests to have a crisis, as a result of failure to reach a compromise,“ Stanièiæ told daily Veèernje Novosti.
Asked how Croatia would vote if the proposal for Kosovo was not acceptable to one of the sides, the ambassador said that, “such a situation whereby a solution comes before the Security Council that is not acceptable to one side, and by association the countries that support her, never comes about, unless there is an intention to provoke one of the great powers, something that very rarely occurs.“
“Croatia is in the unusual position of being a acceptable partner to both Belgrade and Priština, and it has a good relationship with Kosovo’s temporary institutions, UNMIK, as well as with Kosovo Serb representatives and the Serbian government,“ he said.
Stanièiæ said that Croatia, who assumes temporary membership of the Security Council on January 1, could influence the region positively, and could act as a voice for smaller countries.

Clearly he wants Croatia to side with Serbian interests in Kosovo...time will tell as to the outcome.

I'm all for a compromise, as you know, if one side falls short then problems will arise because of it.

^ Like... Who are you dude? Nobody cares about your opinion. What do you care if a Croat said that Kosovo should stay in Serbia. Afterall it's only the extremists and the diaspora that want it independant anyways. If you cannot add something productive to the thread, then don't add anything at all. You should respect the nations that might vote a yes, or an abstaination to the vote at least, because it might help you. Kosovo is an economic/social sh ithole that has no chance of surviving on it's own. Now move on dude, you're boring the hell out of me.

Perhaps the Croatians are likening the Kosovo situation to the Krajina situation they faced a decade ago.

^^^I was going to say something similar, but you beat me too it! On the other hand the Croats may feel sympathy for the Kosovars and vote in favour.

^ The very situation has its roots in the Americans wanting something out of the region. The Balkans are one of the most, if not the most, strategically important points on the Globe. Look how many empires had their rise and fall in the region.
The soil is filled with blood of warriors/soldiers from every single century. And because of it's history, and the history of the greed of the people living there, it is comming to consume us, not as ethnicities, but a civilization as a whole. Foreigners have always dictated our terms, except this time its not so direct, but its obvious.
Croatia knows its status and influence in the region. And maybe, just maybe, our polititians are going to get smarter, and there is evidence in this since they don't want a free Kosovo. Why? Because it will lay foundations all over the world for false hopes and revolutions, and it will only bring more violence to the Balkan Peninsula.

I think whatever happens it could haunt Croatia since their is a probability that the SRS could at sometime in the future start forcing Krajina Serbs to go back to Krajina. Should the radicals do something like that an independent Kosovo would be a bad situation to Croatia due to it likely being a precedent.

Krajina is simply not an issue, nor will it ever be one. I don't think Serbs will ever wield the kind of influence there that they once did. It was always an economically backward region, and the Serbs that lived there have moved on and found better life.
Croatia wants to avoid one thing: increased instability in the Balkans. Kosovo unilaterally declaring independence, and Serbia making moves to block it, raises instability in the region. It is really simple as that.

It was always an economically backward region, and the Serbs that lived there have moved on and found better life. Not at present. But the Radicals have a long term strategy of forcing them to go back to Krajina. At present some 10%+ of the electoral support received by the radicals is due to Krajina Serbs.

^ Who is being charged for his involvement in Ethnic Cleansing. I love Albanian people dude, but some extremists just get on my nerves about an Independant Kosovo. If you saw the economic fallout that could happen, you would want Total Autonomy (even your own defence forces under the Serbian Army) at most, but not independance. Do what is right for your people, not what is right for your image.

Isn't their explanation self-explanatory. Unlike yopu, they're civilized and they hate individuals not entire groups of people what loyalty. Croats could care less what happenns in Kosovo and Kosovars could care less what happens in Croatia. Any actions done by Kosovars for Croatia in the war were done by a small number of individuals and not out of some solidarity with Croats.

Which planet were you living in during the last decades? If you see no problem in living under Serbs, by all means, advocate a unity between the Croat inhabited parts of Herzegovina and RS or something similiar. Leave Kosova to us.

^ Kosovo had more economic prosperity under SFRJ/FRJ. It would have more economic prosperity under Serbia, rather than be a poor state to depend on UN/US supplies.
I don't care whether you people get your independance or not. The simple fact is that if you do, a whole lot of concequences will occur, and all over the world it will be shown. But for the better of your people, you should stay within Serbia as a purely Autonomus Province with your own government, and Military Subdivisions under the command of the Serbian Army.

" It would have more economic prosperity under Serbia, rather than be a poor state to depend on UN/US supplies. "
Ask the Hungarians now if their 'autonomy' got them anywhere for the last 60 years? Ask Montenegro/Macedonia where they stood in FRY economic growth in their FRY status for the last 60 years? Ask Romas where they stand economically in Serbia today? Ask Sanxhak the same, as well as the Albanians in Preshevo.. valley. "Kosovo had more economic prosperity under SFRJ/FRJ...." lolol...open your eyes and stop brown nosing the Serbs.
"Croats could care less what happenns in Kosovo and Kosovars could care less what happens in Croatia."
If this is true, then what is this Croat ambassador ranting about anyhow, since his people don't care? If any Croat believes the article or what the Serbs say, then I'm sure they believe in the tooth fairey too.

^ Whatever man. You people are too blind and too stupid to see what is really going on and what should be done. This is why I won't argue further because its futile.
Though you have some nerve to say something about the Former Yugoslavia, when your Enver Hoxha did everything wrong with Albania and brought you people down to the near stoneage with his policies. Yugoslavia was heaven compared to Communist Albania.
BTW, my people might "believe in the tooth fairey" as you claim, but you know what, at least we are more competent than you will ever be.
PS. Brown nosing Serbs? Naw man, I just tell it like it is. On the other hand, if the United States of America was to come to a sudden halt, Albanians head would go halfway up its arse.
