French daily: Belgium and Balkanization 9 November 2007 | 19:08 | Source: Tanjug PARIS -- Le Figaro urged Europe to "open the issue of its internal borders" in an editorial Friday.
"At the moment when there is increasing talk about Kosovo's independence Europe has to open the issue of its internal borders," the newspaper said.
"Separatists in Europe should not have the feeling that their actions go unpunished and think that they can enjoy the benefits of the European Union, no matter what happens," the article, entitled Belgium and Balkanization, said.
The piece looked at the institutional crisis in Belgium and possibility of its partition to Flanders and Francophone Wallonia.
The author assesses that the disintegration of the country where the European institutions are seated would “open the door for the Balkanization of Europe,” adding that the paradox is that the logic of “to everyone their own” is being developed at the time when the European construction is being built.
“Flemish aspiration towards autonomy - and sometimes towards independence - has the same element of historical revanchism we find in Spain, with the claims of Catalonia and Basque."
"Although less advanced, the similar process is underway in other European countries, such as the one in northern Italy or in Great Britain with the devolution of authority to Scotland and Wells,” the daily said.

Oh please, how much support does the Lega Nord actually have? Last election(which was higher the n usual due to immigration issues) it was still around 3% maybe? And the Lega Nord and such groups ask for more of an autonomous north, they wouldnt want independence.

And the Lega Nord and such groups ask for more of an autonomous north, they wouldnt want independence. Lega Nord had 4.6% in the last election. That means that it had around 14% in northern Italy. That doesn't seem like alot but many Italians in the north sympathize with the Lega Nord. Not only that Lega Nord's support has decreased since an increasing number of italian parties support at least some of it's objectives.

Yea, considering that Italy has been flooded with immigrants and Lega Nord has most hardline stance on the issue.
Then it shows that the ultimate goals of the Lega Nord do not have much support. People go with them over many of their hardline stances on immigration.

Lega Nord tends to be ambigous as to what it's goals ares. It can be claimed as the following: a party for centralization, a party for regionalization or a party for federalization and also seccession. Lega Nord is a party who'se stances are unclear -- also, when Berlusconni put his decentralization plan to a referendum the Lega Nord opposed it even though it met what it that time claimed were it's objectives. Lega Nord is an incompetent party with unclear goals.
