Croatia Biography:
"After years of supplying successful athletes to Yugoslavian Olympic teams, Croatia first competed at the Olympic Games as an independent nation in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. Traditionally strong in team sports, it was in their debut Games that the country's men's basketball team earned a silver medal up against the United States' dream team. One of Croatia's favourite sporting sons, tennis player Goran Ivaniševic, also claimed medals in the newly independent nation's maiden Games, winning bronze in the men's singles and teaming up with Goran Prpic to add a second bronze in the men's doubles.
Croatia has won medals in each of its Summer Games appearances since 1992 and at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, United States claimed its first Olympic title when the men's handball team defeated Sweden to win gold. The men's water polo team also claimed a silver medal in Atlanta. At the 2000 Games in Sydney, the country claimed its first individual Olympic champion when Nikolai Peshalov won gold in the men's 62kg category. The 2004 Games in Athens, Greece was Croatia's most successful Olympic Games to date with a total of five medals across five different sports, including another Olympic title for the men's handball team."
