B92 News Region Region Greek man beheads girlfriend 4 August 2008 | 11:08 | Source: Reuters ATHENS -- A 31-year-old Greek beheaded his girlfriend and carried her head round the popular tourist island of Santorini.
The man, who police said had psychological problems, injured a police officer and two women while trying to escape arrest after killing the 25-year-old teacher in Greece's most picturesque island.
"He was walking around, carrying her head and telling the astonished villagers not to stop him," a police official told Reuters. "They knew he had psychological problems ... but they didn't expect he would reach this point."
The man knifed a policeman who tried to arrest him, stole a police car and crashed into a motorcycle injuring two women, before police ended his escape by ramming the car.
Tourism Minister Aris Spiliotopoulos vowed earlier this week to make Greek resorts safer after a spate of violent incidents at the peak of the tourist season

If crazy people are left free, this will happen...he even had a girlfriend! ...by the other hand, sometimes normal people threat their girlfriends and wives and kill them in a moment of jealousy and craziness...

He was an official psychopath. He had domestic violent past record. He was not a normal case of a normal human who suddenly got crazy.
Unfortunately, with laws like that (treat psychopaths like ordinary people, and after some days in the clinic let them hang around).. these crimes are innevitable.
Its like a volcano that someday will explode. The laws say... just wait to see the explotion.. and pray not to be next to it..

^ I agree. Over the past few years we have witnessed a profileration of crimes committed by locals that a few years ago were very rare indeed.Take for instance robberies and fraud in the bigger cities..committed by foreigners... now the locals are jumping in after seeing how easy it is to get away with it,especially with the local lame police force. I like what the Italians are doing dispatching 3000 soldiers to assist the police in high crime areas.

greece is not italy....as soon as soldiers are deployed here, ppl are going to think the junta is back ! That will never roll here....
we just have to train our cops better...its no secret they are used to the easy living when greece was practically crime free. Now they have so many different ppls to deal with that they no longer no what to do or how to act. Our police blows...period

Unfortunately, with laws like that (treat psychopaths like ordinary people, and after some days in the clinic let them hang around).. these crimes are innevitable. Basili same thing happened with Australia, laws were changed for some mild cases of psychopaths to be treated as normal people and released, then suddenly the streets in the City of Melbourne are no longer as safe as they use to be. Xalase o kosmos pantou. This was just waiting to happen, and is unfortunate...poor women. Yes, many crimes in Greece are influenced by the influx foreigners. Can't agree more with you there !!!

Terro "Sad thing is, if his girlfriend was from "Fyrom" it would be okay in greeks' eyes. " ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If that was the case or if the girlfriend was Albanian... then the Greek forum would be crowded with Fyromians or Albanians claiming it was a racist crime and the killer was a member of Nationalist Party or a Secret services spy on a mission.. lol

We had very little crime in Greece 20 years ago.... in fact the lowest in Europe.Other then some domestic spats or personal vendettas there was nothing.... Then all broke loose.... let's just say... I wish Albania was still communist.
Of course I blame all the immigrants.... the same thing is happening in Montreal with the large influx of Haitians... ...

Your paranoia over crime and immigrants is creating this delusion that Greece is somehow a crime haven now compared to yesterday and that its the influx of immigrants doing it. You guys now put extra attention over every crime whereas in the past you ignored the news reports.
Real statistics are what matter, otherwise everything you say has no basis. Can any of you show me any paper or research showing a rapid increase in crime with the influx of immigrants and how this has affected the Greek psyche into committing more crime?
The same delusion exists in Japan and there all studies continually disprove these thoughts.

Canaris,
it is true that crime rate in Greece pertinent to Albanian's ordinary crime is diminished. Entire Albanian families that live there (thousands) left Albania exactly for that reason: to be in a quiet place, with no crime and to have the possibility to conduct a normal life. Crime cannot be committed from people who work hard to provide for their families. I am not excluding the possibility of any ordinary crime (such as stealing a purse or a store), but it is the moment to draw attention to the organized crime (prostitution network) and falsifying documentation, where Greeks are included too, not withstanding Russians, Bulgars, Romanians etc.

For once I agree with Kanaris, save his point about Albanian immigrants. If there weren't any Albanian immigrants in Greece you'd have Pakistanis, Kurds, Nigerians and Africans in addition to Poles, Romanians, Bulgarians amongst others. You think all those facilities that were built for the Olympics would have been built by the Greeks? You Greeks don't realize how good you have it that the majority of your immigrants are Albanians. Imagine if you had 700,000 Pakistanis instead. Athens would be littered with minarets. Albanians instead want to integrate within the Greek society and the only obstacle they have encountered is the Greek governemnt. Immigration brings about a disruption of social order. It is not only international immigration but intra-national as well. Tirana, a safe city during communism saw an influx of of people moving into the city within a very short period of time and as a result the crime skyrocketed. Where you had people who had lived within a community for generations now you have a melting pot of people from all over Albania. That breeds distrust and it takes generations to rebuild the trust that existed in the old days. The same can apply to any major metroploitan city be it Athens, Rome, London or NYC.

Greeks did crimes... but crimes had a logic.
"I want his wallet.. I kick him and I'll take his wallet" not I want an applepie... I'll kill him, his wife and his chilfren to take his applepie from the oven"..
That is how crime changed in Greece. The respect for human life changed. Now.. it is normal to kill for a very stupid reason.. Immigrants with criminal behavior and their way of seeing things and life in general helped on that. First they shoot and then the robb.
