The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), built on the French-Swiss border, is the largest particle accelerator in the world. It will be switched on on Wednesday next week, recreating for the first time in Human history the conditions that existed immediately after the Big Bang.
Some physicists, including the German specialist of chaos theory, Otto Rössler, believe that the LHC could create very small black holes that would gradually grow and engulf our entire planet. They lodged a complaint against the LHC at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, denouncing a risk of "end of the world", but the court dismissed the case in the end of August.

Hmm 5.2 billion to build this useless potentialy dangerous piece of machinery.....
I wonder how many deseases that plagues man, 5.2 billion and all those scientists could have cured ?
How much food could have been bought to feed the hungry or new technologys to grow this food.
Etc Etc etc

How about if they find the god particle, 5billion will look like two cents compared to that...if they find it they will be able to do ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE, cure death, make people out of scratch, make slaves (robotic) that work for us, nano technology and fusion fuels, should i say so we dont have to work!

All that money! Vinjak is right...if the project fails (which is most probably) without any results, then this is the end of the world...

it will not fail, they will find one thing or another if they dont find what they are looking for, there are milions of [possibilities, otherwise 25,000 of the best scientists from around the world wouldnt have done that if it was nothing!

Whatever they find... we will only know a fraction of it..... or some completely different story.

Id rather see 5 billion dollars spend on knowing the answer to the universe than on earthly livings. Even if it fails its still the money worth trying. How many billion dollars spend on war alone? How many billion dollars spend financing beaurocrats. This is a productive spending. This shows civilization . This is not the end of the world. It is an experiment finding the answer to the Big Bang Theory.

Update
At 12.30 a.m. on Wednesday, the Large Hadron Collider is scheduled to be switched on by the scientists on the Franco-Swiss border. The LHC is a 17-mile underground ring intended to smash opposing beams of 7 TeV protons into each other, in an attempt to recreate the after-effects of the „Big Bang.”
Built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the highest-energy particle accelerator is contained in a circular tunnel with a circumference of 27 kilometres at a depth ranging from 50 to 175 metres underground. After initial particle beam injections were carried out without any problems in August, tomorrow scientists are hoping to successfully circulate a beam through the entire LHC.
The first high-energy collisions are scheduled for next month. The purpose of the Collider is to fill in the missing links in the Standard Model of physics, which is a theory describing three of the four known fundamental interactions among the elementary particles. The interaction that has eluded the Standard Model is gravity.
The event taking place tomorrow has given raise to many a heated debate on the impact that switching the Large Hadron Collider on will have on our planet. While some deem Wednesday as being the D-Day, others say it will be a huge step towards unlocking the mysteries of the Universe, which is in no way to cause any damage to the Earth. And some, namely a pair of Russian scientists, think that the LHC will be the first time machine and expect creatures from the future to visit our planet after it begins its mission.
Critics’ main fear is that the Collider will produce a black hole (or something similar to it) that will bring the world to an end.
CERN officials have conducted a series of safety reviews that revealed that there is no cause for concern, the formation of a black hole being highly unlikely. Moreover, even if this worst case scenario were to become reality, the hole would be absorbed due to Hawking Radiation before it could do any harm, CERN scientists added.
The data from the experiment will be used to solve the mysteries surrounding concepts such as “dark matter,” “dark energy,” and, most importantly, “Higgs Boson.” The latter, known as the “God Particle,” is the only particle that the Standard Model didn’t observe, although it has predicted it. The “Higgs boson” could explain how massless particles manage to construct mass in matter.
CERN and Fernilab have made huge efforts to observe the particle experimentally, but to no avail so far. The hope now lies with the LHC. Nevertheless, it will take baby-steps towards the re-enactment of the “Big Bang.” First, technicians will pump a beam in one direction only. If this goes smoothly, the beam will be pushed in the other direction and afterwards, beams will be projected both ways, thus smashing protons into each other. Tiny collisions recreating the “Big Bang” will be produced later this year.
Let the countdown begin.

I wonder what they think about this?
I think this people should be placed in the Collider used as particles and torpedoed into cosmos.
Whipping sound would fade slowly as they travel deep in space and become one with the universe.
nc nc nc life in America is to easy so this lost peps have the luxury of devoting their time to rotten tree trunks.

Critics that say that black hole bulls**t should first get some basic degree in particle physics. If there were black holes even produced they would be short lived cause of the Hawking radiation, in short they would decay quickly cause they wouldn't be stable.
Project itself is not having a specific aim but it is here to check modern theories in particle physics and no matter the experiment outcome it will be useful. Also this experimental setup is quite cheap in contrast to what USA wanted to make alone in 90-ties with SSC. And with all of the possible knowledge about universe this project will give do not forget to have in mind that for building this masterpiece made many breakthroughs in materials science, civil engineering, computer science and sensor design had to be made which will be latter used in other areas for example medicine, software, IT telecommunications, hardware construction... The main export of this project is knowledge which can be used afterward in other areas. Another example of how totally different technology can be used in other area is my colleague who made an software which calculates the dispersion of light in interstellar dust and in the end that software is also used for medical diagnosis...
It is funny how people go against an simple and pure scientific project howling about food and diseases while US alone spends 849,875,309,000 dollars for military which kills people and destroys nations while here 111 nations all with their share made this project come true with 5.2 billion dollars. Each B-2 bomber alone costs 2.2 billion dollars and the only use from it is killing people.
As for food and diseases I will tell you that the problem about food is not the production since many technologies which can upgrade food production exist but in distribution, neither Americans need to be so fat as they are, neither Africans need to be so hungry. I remember of situations when perfectly good food was thrown away in USA into the sea because the prices needed to be stable on the market. Come on, the problem is economy, but you find some totally different scientific project to blame. On the other had there are new cures for diseases in the world, some of them quite simple, but the pharmaceutical lobby actually blackmails them to stop the research. You would be amazed that some groups until now found promising cures for cancer, diabetes and so on... For example Pliva company in Croatia had one of the biggest research institutions in pharmaceutics, but in the end she was bought by Barr which closed all research laboratories and made Pliva to make only generics. And these are just few of many examples.
As for the energies the LHC is actually harmless since it has 14 TeV in pp collisions. Earth is being bombarded with outer space particles with 1 000 000 000 000 times greater energies.

OMG what kind of idiots are these! I respect the nature and try to live in equilibrium with her as much as possible but this is completely moronic. They remind me on the Ludism movement in England.
