Kosovo PM: Nobody surprised with Serbia's UN move
PM Thaçi
Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi said yesterday that the Serb initiative in the United Nations is not surprising since no one at this time could expect good things for Kosovo coming out of Serbia.
"The whole world knows that the face of Serbia in rapport with Kosovo is the genocide that Serbia has committed in Kosovo," said PM Thaçi during yesterday's government meeting, inviting democratic countries to continue supporting Kosovo.
Thaçi called on supporters of Kosovo to block Serbia's world court initiative. However, Kosovo's diplomatic efforts to fight Serbia on this issue have largely been limited to the days during the UN General Assembly.
Kosovo Foreign Minister Skënder Hyseni will tomorrow face his critics in Parliament on his performance so far. The opposition has called for the resignation of FM Hyseni, with PM Thaçi defending the diplomatic work of his government but largely staying away from statements on his foreign minister.
Thaçi said yesterday that President Fatmir Sejdiu and the Foreign Minister Skënder Hyseni will represent Kosovo's interest with dignity during the UN meetings in New York.
"We will have challenges in the process of recognitions, but they are not insurmountable. Kosovo will be part of the EU and NATO. We will continue to build good rapports with all our neighbhoors. Kosovo independence will bring peace and regional stability," said Thaçi.
The Serb request to judge the validity of the right of Kosovo to declare independence made it through committee at the UN yesterday and will now be placed in front of the General Assembly where Serbia needs the support of the majority of UN members. If the initiative makes it through the General Assembly, as is expected, the International Court of Justice in the Hague could take around two years to hand out the non-binding opinion, say legal experts. This time could potentially be used by Serbia to slow the process of recognitions and take the contentious Kosovo issue out of the internal Serbian politics for a few years. Most of the countries that have already recognized Kosovo say they will support the initiative, with Great Britain being the strongest opposer.
