Macedonia: 42 police officers accused of stealing public funds 3 November 2008 | 09:50 | FOCUS News Agency Skopje. Forty-two police officers in Macedonia will face prosecution after being accused of corruption and stealing about 140,000 euros of public funds, the country's interior ministry said Sunday AFP reports. The 42 officers all worked on the customs route between Macedonia and Bulgaria. A police investigation found they diverted more than 2.6 million denars (42,500 euros, 54,000 dollars) from the Macedonia state budget as well as 5.9 million denars from the public transport company Makedonija pat, the minister said. A candidate to European Union membership since 2005, Macedonia has yet not opened negotiations. Olli Rehn, the European Commission's enlargement commissioner, has already said the EU will not start talks with Macedonia this year. The Commission, the EU's executive branch, will shortly publish a report on all EU candidate countries, which will assess how much progress each is making on the necessary reforms required for membership. Rehn told AFP in an interview last month that he was disappointed Macedonia had not made sufficient progress in key areas, such as the fight against corruption, but also economic and judicial reform.

Good. Of course they are not making any progress. Keep them outside EU until the Albanians become a majority. I hope Greece will veto FYROM even when the latter will meet all requirements. Just let the Albanians handle them.
