MODERNISATION AND REPAIR
Croatia’s Gredelj Seals Deal with Montenegro
The agreement on investment repair and modernisation of 10 passenger carriages is worth 3.5 million euros.
Croatia’s train carriages factory “Gredelj” and the Montenegrin Railway Transport signed an agreement on investment repair and modernisation of ten passenger carriages worth 3.5 million euros, the Gredelj company said on Tuesday.
The agreement envisages extensive work on ten passenger carriages that are older than 20 years and encompasses a comprehensive modernisation and investment repairs, which includes air conditioning and an increased level of comfort for passengers.
The work done will be especially important since the trains will travel between Bar and Belgrade during the tourist season. The Montenegrin Railway Transport management aims to raise the level of comfort for passengers.
The works on the first five carriages should be completed by the end of May 2009 so they could start running during the tourist season, while the five remaining carriages will be completed by the end of August 2009.
Continuation of cooperation
Gredelj won the repair and modernisation job in an international tender at which it was selected as the most favourable bidder.
The company has voiced satisfaction with the job which, the company officials say, is a continuation of cooperation with the Montenegrin Railways. In 2000 Gredelj repaired passenger carriages in Montenegro, but less extensively.
Like other railway companies in the region, the Montenegrin Railways underwent a process of restructuring. The company is divided into two parts - transport and infrastructure. After restructuring, the railway adopted a plan of activities in which the reconstruction of passenger carriages has priority. But also, the railways expect to implement other significant projects of reconstruction and modernisation of train engines and locomotives where Gredelj also sees its chance of cooperation, the company said.
