Hey everyone .
This probably ain't the typical topic that really belongs here but I guess I'd like some views from other perspectives about something that's quite confusing.
The deal is that before my parents got married, my dad had been married to someone else and had a son by her. So I have a half older brother. I've always known of his existance but he hasn't ever been a big deal because I never saw him, nor did my dad talk about him or bring him home (even though he had contact to him). I never asked my dad why he chose to keep his son and me and my siblings seperate.
So...some time ago I went to a good friend's birthday party in another city. I have my husband's last name now but obviously my friends know what my maiden name is...so my friend was like, "you have to meet someone, I think you might know him (she meant like a cousin from far beyond...I think you know how it's like...you got all these family members, and you don't know half of them) 'cuz he has the same last name as you"...to make a long story short it turned out it was my dad's son. It wasn't akward at all...I always thought it'd be extremely akward to meet him...but it wasn't.
Anyway, the same night, when I was heading back home, my brother asked if he could have my number...is it weird that I froze up completely? I don't know why it came as a surprise that he asked. Perhaps because I don't really think about him on a normal day. He was cool about it though..he just smiled and said it was okay if I felt it was too weird but he gave me his number and told me he'd like it if I called him whenever I was ready to do it.
I am ready to do it now but unfortunately some people (my mum and sister, mainly) don't want me to get in touch with him...and I don't get why :S. They talk about "things getting messed up" or whatever but seriously...how are things going to mess up by getting to know my own brother? :S. The only way I've experienced that things get messed up is because my mum and sister make a problem out of it, not because my brother has actually been a problem. Anyway...I ended up calling him, and I'm going to see him on friday, but my mum has basically refused to talk to me ever since she heard about this. So now I'm getting 2nd thoughts about the whole thing. Even though I think she's being ridiculous it sucks that she's mad at me over this.
Would you cancel friday in my shoes?
