The film “The Trap” directed by Srdan Golubovic has been shortlisted for the “Oscar” in the Foreign Language Film category. Apart from the Serbian film, eight more films, among which are Nikita Mikhalkov’s “12” and Andrzej Wajda’s “Katyn”, will enter the competition for the best five films which will be nominated for the “Oscar”.
Golubovic said for “Blic” that he was delighted with the news, but surprised as well. “I am very happy with the news, but also surprised, especially because some of the front-runners have not been shortlisted, like Fatih Akin’s film. However, I am very flattered by the fact that my film has been in the same group with the films of Andrzej Wajda and Nikita Mikhalkov. This represents a great success to the whole film crew. Although it is unlikely that the film will enter the final competition of five films, this a great success for us, in the first because our film will enter American market.”
After showing at the Palm Springs Festival several days ago, “The Trap” has received positive reviews in American press, while the film script had already been bought for the Hollywood version.
“I think that the Americans have recognized the universal story of the film, as well as the fact that it has been directed by the universal language of directors,” Golubovic said for “Blic”.
In competition for the “Oscar” in the in the Foreign Language Film category, there were 63 films. Apart from the films directed by Golubovic, Mikhalkov and Wajda, the following films have also been shortlisted: “Die Foelscher“ by Stefan Ruzowitzky (Austria), “Ano em que meus Pais sairam de Ferias“ by Cao Hamburger (Brazil), “L’age des tenebres“ by Denys Arcand (Canada), “Beaaufort” by Joseph Cedar (Israel), “La Sconosciuta” by Giuseppe Tornatore (Italy) and “Mongol“ by Sergei Bodrov (Kazakhstan).
Which five films will be nominated for the “Oscar” will be known on the 22nd of January.
Golubovic better than Woody Allen
The “Hollywood Reporter“, influential American film magazine, has released several days ago a rave review about Golubovic’s film.
"The Trap," Serbia 's entry for the 2007 foreign-language film Oscar, was one of the best films screened at this year's Palm Springs International Film Festival,” Stephen Farber says at the beginning of his text. Comparing “The Trap” with “Cassandra's Dream” directed by Woody Allen, Farber says that the story bears some uncanny similarities to Woody Allen's new film, "Cassandra's Dream." In both movies, financially desperate men are lured into killing a total stranger. “While Allen's movie has stars like Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrell and Tom Wilkinson in the cast, it turns out to be a torpid and tedious affair. By contrast, "The Trap" is a crackerjack thriller with tension that never abates,” Farber says. The reviewer of the prestigious magazine also says that “the picture is beautifully executed by director Srdjan Golubovic and a first-rate cast. Golubovic composes eloquent, subjective shots that encourage us to share the protagonist's mounting desperation. Similarly, the script and direction both contain many sharp touches. (...)Even at a time when foreign films face rough sledding in the U.S. , this movie has enough suspense to guarantee rapt audiences. Mladen's moral disintegration makes for a thoroughly involving cinematic experience,” the “Hollywood Reporter“ reviewer concluded.
