There are a lot of rumors about what will happen in 2012. Religion, science and even art is involved (a new movie will come out in July directed by Roland Emmerich, called 2012). There is a lot of talk about it, if you google 2012 you'll get 267,000,000 results. It's not the movie or the web that makes you to think about it, but the documentary in History channel, called Decoding The Past: Doomsday 2012, where you can see that there is a scientific explanation of what might happen in 2012...and that's the scariest part...

On December 21, 2012, for the first time in approximately 26,000 years, the Sun will rise to conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way and the ecliptic plane. According to the ancient Maya, this date will mark the end of one world as we know it and the beginning of another. Could this correlate with the appearance of Nibiru, the mysterious 10th planet of our solar system, and the destruction of Earth by Nibiru? The Sumerians had an encounter with one of the inhabitants of Nibiru, a people called the Anunnaki. In this 4500 year old Sumerian artifact, you can see our solar system, with all the planets in their correct sizes, plus one extra planet. How did they know the correct sizes and number of planets in our solar system? And what of the 10th planet? Interesting facts or far out weed induced fairy tales?

In what tone are you asking?
You use the first Byzantine flag and I use the last. I have always used the last. This is because along with Byzantium being my favorite period of history, I have traced a family member to Constantinople, just before Constantinople fell. Constantine XI Palaiologos was the ruler at that time and I use the flag he flew in Constantinople until 1453.
Does this satisfy your curiosity, Ansenije? I hope it does because I did not like your tone and I will not be amplifying my answer to you. Now, granted it is difficult to read tones in writing, and if I am wrong, my bad!

Forget about oracles, prophets and religion...here is what is going to happen on 12/21/12, and this is science, not prophecy. What impact will have that on Earth and humanity, nobody knows, because last time it happened it was 15,800 years ago, and all we know about it is that all of a sudden the ice age on Earth was over: The Galactic Alignment of December 21, 2012The Perfect StormOur solar system is part of a huge disc shaped collection of stars and planets called the Milky Way. We're located somewhere on the edge of the disc, slightly on top of the narrow disc. But very soon we'll be moving to the bottom of the disc. This change, from top to bottom, begins on December 21, 2012. Yes, that's right. On the same day when our Sun is at it's solar maximum, something will happen that's never happened before -- the ecliptic of our solar system will intersect with the Galactic plane, called the "Galactic Equator" of the Milky Way!. If you imagine our solar system as a bunch of peas on a plate, with a huge meatball in the center, imagine the Milky Way as a city-size pizza with the "Guiness World Book Record Meatball" in its center! Prior to December 2012 we have been drifting on the top of the pizza, never really able to see the bottom. The plate and pizza are not parallel. They are moving at different angles. We've been drifting down, down, down... and on December 21st, 2012, we will be exactly level with the crust -- forming an "x" at the Galactic Equator where galactic gravity is the strongest. After 2012, if we are still here, we will be passing through the bottom zone, viewing the Milky Way pizza from the South. Yes, there's even more! By some amazing coincidence, not only will we be intersecting with the Galactic Equator, but we will be doing this precisely aligned with the center of the Galaxy where there is maximum mass! More mass means more gravity. More gravity means more influence from those barycenters in our Sun. That means exponential increases in solar disruptions -- all coinciding on the same day!

I believe that the theory that a polar shift happening on a single day was debunked? Dont most scientists believe that it is to happen over a slow period of time? And I think most astrologists today don't place much credence on Jenkin's theory (the one posted by Albquietman)

I don't believe that either, I mean the geophysical polar shift happening in one day or in a matter of days. What I believe, first we do not know what is going to happen when our solar system crosses the Galactic Equator, nobody knows exactly, even the astrologists for the simple reason that our knowledge of the universe and how it works it's very limited. Think about it, we realized that there is a black hole in the center of every galaxy not even 8 years ago, and we know nothing about black holes except the fact that nothing escapes from her, even light.
What we can say that will happen is that the Sun's activity will go up (because of the high levels of gravity of the Galactic Equator) to a level that will affect the life on Earth, not Earth itself. Earth as a planet will continue to exist, but the if Sun's flares reach Earth, not a living thing on its way can survive...that's what we know so far, because it has happened 15,800 years ago, and it is registered from our ancestors at that time on cave drawings.

Well, I hope this guy from National Aeronautics is right: Question I've read an article suggesting that the entire solar system is experiencing global warming. This fits in with the galactic alignment prediction, I have in fact seen documents about it by scientists. Anyway, so close to the centre of the galaxy some rays are emitted? And if the solar system is moving through the centre of the galaxy, then it would heat up the solar system too, correct? You have asked a complicated question, so forgive a long answer. (1) There is no general evidence of heating of the solar system; the article you read is wrong if it said so. What is clear is that the Earth is heating rather rapidly due primarily to an increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. (2) There is no galactic alignment. This is one of the stranger claims of the 2012 conspiracy theories. I am certain that this has not been stated or predicted by scientists. The solar system is slowly orbiting within the galaxy at a distance of about 30,000 light years from the center, and nothing special is happening now or in 2012. (3) Everything in the universe emits "rays". These emissions cover the entire electromagnetic spectrum from long-wave radio to short-wave x-rays and gamma-rays. The center of our Milky Way Galaxy includes some relatively strong emitters, but at a distance of 30,000 light years they have no effect on the solar system. (4) The solar system is not in any sense moving through or toward the center of the galaxy. We are in a slow nearly circular orbit about the galactic center with a period of roughly 250 million years. (5) The only sources of heat for planets and moons originate within the solar system: primarily the Sun, of course, but also from internal radioactivity and in some cases from tides. For the inner planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars) the only significant source of heating is sunlight. The galactic center is irrelevant. (6) If we are worried about our planet and its life, we need to look at what is really happening to threaten us: global warming from increased greenhouse gases, and destruction of habitat and loss of biological diversity. All these rumors and lies about 2012 obscure the real issues we all need to grapple with. David Morrison NAI Senior Scientist December 19, 2008
