The USA is making pressure on the EU to offer Serbia much more than not only a political agreement, but the agreement on stabilization and association as well. America is forcing the EU to deviate from its standards and offer Serbia accelerated admission to the Union because of the expected reaction by Belgrade over the soon declaration of Kosovo independence, ‘Blic’ source close to the EU claims. This source, however, also claims that the EU shall not back down in spite of discreet signals coming from Brussels on accelerated association being under consideration.
This source says that even these weak signals might die down with time after the first crisis because of declaration of Kosovo independence is overcomed. America, nevertheless is insisting on easing of standards referring to the precedent in case of Bulgaria and Romania.
American, French and British media keep on reporting on these signals. They say that Serbia President Boris Tadic is faced with numerous challenges immediately after election victory and that Europe should encourage Serbia as soon as possible and include it more into European courses.
‘The outcome of presidential election in Serbia has opened possibility for the USA and its European allies to undertake some for long time delayed steps for stabilization of the Balkans, American ‘Washington Post’ reported.
British ‘Times’ says that Tadic’s tight victory has been met with relief by Brussels, but warns that the crisis in the Balkans has not been over yet and that Europe has to act quickly and start negotiations over eventual Serbia’s membership in the EU.
‘Financial Times’ concludes that even if the interim political agreement on cooperation offered by the EU is signed, there are other conflicts threatening EU-Serbia relations, especially the one concerning Belgrade’s reaction to declaration of Kosovo independence.
'Le Figaro': Stability of the region threatened
‘Tadic shall have to balance within very small maneuvering space between opposing independence and supporting joining the EU…It’s not only Serbia European or non-European future at stake, but stability of the whole region that already weakened by wars during the 90s could experience new violence in case of failure by the pro-European and reform forces in Belgrade’, ‘‘Le Figaro’’ daily of Paris reports.
