Japanese cars are boring. ABSOLUTELY NO appeal, nothing new or interesting, there for average joe's. If you want a NICE car (and not some two bit Japanese piece of shit) buy European.

Volkswagen is the best from that list, choose that car. for most, overall, toyota is the best IN THE WORLD, but its a subjective issue anyway. Can't go wrong with German engineering though. Toyota is a good choice, but I would pick their car after Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes Benz.

If you want a NICE car (and not some two bit Japanese piece of s**t) buy European. apparently you never owned one... Maybe the same goes for me and people like me who refuse to drive anything that is not made in Japan. (besides that, i didnt ruled out checking out some VW alongside with the rest of the vehicles on my list). Performance wise, no maker has ever made such reliable and super powerful motors like Honda no maker has ever made such good handling and active safety vehicles at mid price range like Subaru no maker has ever made a total quality control system of parts and services comparable to that of Toyota no maker has ever made massive hybrid technology like Honda/Toyota-Lexus no maker has ever OWND every other super car in Nirburgring like Nissan with the new *production* skyline Would i consider buying some german car? yes maybe, but the braincells in my head (well at least the healthy ones) advise me to go jap... hey Srbobran, when you will be seeing the wings of some STi/EVO as they bypass you and your german car, think again about my words! PS BMWs are for drug dealers!

BMW engines are the best that is out there!!
no maker has ever made such good handling and active safety vehicles at mid price range like Subaru
Volvo is safer!!
no maker has ever made a total quality control system of parts and services comparable to that of Toyota
Agree!!
no maker has ever made massive hybrid technology like Honda/Toyota-Lexus
Agree, but i dont like hybrids, they are ussually ugly!!
no maker has ever OWND every other super car in Nirburgring like Nissan with the new *production* skyline
Theres alot of rumors that nissan lied about those numbers, They didnt want to comment on that, On the other hand, not every car is tested on Nürburgring...
Would i consider buying some german car? yes maybe, but the braincells in my head (well at least the healthy ones) advise me to go jap...
Japanese cars are more economical, then again i dont know how much money u want to spend... And there is no such thing as a good car buy... You loose either way..
hey Srbobran, when you will be seeing the wings of some STi/EVO as they bypass you and your german car, think again about my words!
Try beat a Audi RS4,5,6 in a subaru!! Pick any subaru u want..

I was in this exact same position only two months ago. And I bought a Subaru Forester X.
My advice? Don't buy any of them. If you want a car that can go off-road, none of these can do it. They are all hopeless. The Suzuki is probably the best in that regard with it's locking diffs and low range gearing but it still has poor ground clearance and approach/depature angles. Like I said, none can properly go off-road. Just buy a Patrol/Pajero/Land Cruiser. Or a Hilux/Navara/Triton.
If you want something for on-road, get a normal sedan or wagon/estate. The handling and fuel consumption advantage on normal cars is better than any of these soft-roaders.
These cars are a compromise on both accounts. Before I purchased, I actually thought I would get the best of both worlds; some off-road ability and acceptable on-road comform. But instead, they are compromised on both accounts and end up as jack of all trades and master of none.
Anyway, if you still want to buy one, probably get the VW. My Subaru is pretty crap. It has a gutless engine, an annoying and slow automatic gearbox, too much bodyroll, etc, etc. Oh and extremely uncomfortable seats. I have a sore back everytime I finish a long drive. I'm going to sell it very soon and get something else.

"I have a sore back everytime I finish a long drive"
neither i nor my wife or two kids ever had a problem with our 111,000 km mileage'd stock suspension impreza. During the test drive on the mountain (not the mountain road, just the ... mountain) the forester felt like a charm to my body... i suggest you visit a doctor instead of accusing the scooby. P.S. If you go for the automatic gearbox, you pay your choice.

Pick any subaru u want.. porsche was ridiculed once again, and their claims about the tires were equally ridiculous and helpless. A nissan priced half in comparison to the their top inch porsche humiliated them in the most brutal manner. Then they put their ....... engineer.. not a prof. driver test the nissan with bad tyres (and he did surprisingly really well!!) Indeed they were smth to laugh about. AFA the RS4,5,6 vs subaru, just take a look at www.osecuroms.orgwww.openecu.orgwww.romraider.comwith FEW bucks and a rather good skill in understanding mechanics and engine mgmt, someone can reach 450 BHP very easily... Add to the equation that eventually the audi *has* to turn, (compare any of the junky audis to the AWD of EVO or the STI), and once again it turns out that audis/bmws/mertsendes etc... are only good for attracting chicks and nothing more... oh and they fit the drug dealer model as well..

I do a lot of driving and I've never been so uncomfortable in another car (except for my S2000 which was also uncomfortable). The problem with the MY09 Forester seats are the headrests which are tilted forward for safety reasons but they force your head towards your chin if you like to sit upright (like I do). But then, all new cars seem to have such headrests. I suggest you base your opinion on more than just a "test drive" before you advise me to visit a doctor.

nikolaa you bought a car from a brand which is the king of modification. There must be a solution to it, if you visit the right forums and the right workshops.
P.S. In the same 2.0 litter range the subie is just a little slower than its CRV or RAV4 counterpart. The tiguan seems nice on paper, but frankly its.... VW...

I have the non-turbo model so it's useless for modification. It's easier for me to just get another car.
I watched a review of the Forester on that car show 5th Gear, and at first I was a bit annoyed that he kept bagging my car but eventually I had to concede that the reviewer was right. It's just not good enough.

well there are hordes of other owners who would swear by it after many years of ownership... by mod, i didnt mean engine-wise but to fix the problem with your neck...
so, was it fast during the test drive and slow afterwards? what happened?
PS1 Do you need a TV show to tell you what car you need?
PS.2 whats wrong with you people when you choose automatic gearboxes? Is it too hard for you to manual gear up/down?

I use the car for work purposes so an auto makes more sense. I'm not after speed, just comfort, practicality and reliability.
And no, I don't need a TV show to tell me the car is average. I initially rejected their verdict but with an open mind, I came to realise they are right.
Anyway, if you like the Subaru then good on you. I'm just warning potential buyers that it does have some downsides.

Thanx man, so regarding performance what changed between the test drive and real driving? bear in mind that subies tend to go better after the first 6,000-8,000 kilometers. So what was frostie's weaknesses ? -Engine performance -Soar neck Is there an equally engine equipped automatic SUV that goes better? If you dont like it, would another SUV serve your purposes better? I noticed at the beginning you started blaming SUVs in general, so i take it its has more to do with that and less with your actual scoobie. (bodyroll is inevitable at this weight and mass, and believe be the frostie can outperform almost ALL of them in regards to sharp cornering).

The lack of torque and power from the engine doesn't bother me when cruising but it's annoying when you try and overtake and it just struggles. The crappy gearbox exaggerates the problem though. Sometimes it kicks down to a lower gear even though it will only have 500rpm to go before redline and sometimes it just never kicks down. Which is silly.
All these petrol models are the same though. The Rav4, the CRV, they all have torqueless engines. But if you can live with it them they're fine. A turbo (or turbo diesel) might be a better option if available.
Like I said, I just don't recommend this type of car. If you want off-road, get a proper off-roader. If not, get a normal car. But that's just my opinion.

I wasnt talking about Tuned cars, i was talking about STOCK cars... Thers audis that are tuned to 800.900bph... But u cant compare in tuning... There is no way in hell a Stock Subaru would Beet a RS model from audi... Subaru is "Sport" Audi is Elegance, sport, luxury in one package.... Just like BMW.... Just sit in a Audi and then sit in a Subaru.. if u dont feel the difference in the build quality u can shoot me.. About the crapy 4WD.. A3 and TT has the crapy HALDEX system.... A4 and upper classes has the Torsen differential... The difference is that Haldex is Electrical and Torsen is Pure Mechanics... Theres a reason they adopted the Quattro(torsen) to the Lambo Murcielago and Gallardo??? The only thing i can see thats better about japanese cars is Price/car u get more car for less money.... Audi, BMW, Merc is PREMIUM cars.... Subaru, Toyota, Honda are mass production cars... Subaru u can compare to VW and Opel etc etc... BTW heres a video about the quattro - au.youtube.com/watch?v=EyKstZ6a5ag&feature=related

statebriga, "The only thing i can see thats better about japanese cars is Price/car u get more car for less money.... "
what you are actually saying here is that according to the rules of capitalism and natural selection, jap cars stand a better chance of survival compared to their euro rivals. I agree.
