Today, in the presence of Premier Berisha, at the venues of the Sheraton Hotel in Tirana, the representatives of Albania Ministry of Economy, Trade and Energy and EVN AG, Austria and STATKRAFT AS, Norway signed the BOT type concession agreement for building three hydroelectric power stations along the Devolli River. The implementation of this project has the great advantage of optimizing the use of the Devolli River cascade through three planned hydroelectric power stations according to the following standards:
Capacity: 320 MW
Tunnel: 62 km
Investments: about 1 billion Euro
Profit: about 1 billion Euro
The Minister of Economy, Trade and Energy Genc Ruli and the representatives of the two companies EVN AG, Austria and STATKRAFT AS, Norway signed the concession agreement.
Premier Berisha hailed the signing of the contract with two of the biggest energy companies in Europe and considered the Devolli project one of the most major ones in the history of the country and crowning of the policy of the government to turn Albania into an attractive country for the FDI.
We signed this contract with two energy companies among the most known in Europe, EVN AG, Austria and STATKRAFT AS, Norway. This is an event in Albania as it is the successful crowning of the policy of the government to turn Albania into an attractive country for the FDI as well as the crowning of a great job that the two companies EVN AG and STATKRAFT AS made with the study on Devoll cascade.
The representatives of the two companies, Burkhard Hofer, EVN Chairman of the Executive Board and Ragnvald Naero, Executive Vice President of Statkraft AS extended thanks to the government of Albania for the successful implementation of this contract. They said that Devolli cascade project is one of the biggest investments in Albania and Europe in the hydro-electricity field. They expressed their trust in Albania that has achieved a lot in the course of these years and has developed a favorable business environment.
Premier Berisha considered Devoll cascade project a step toward Albania becoming a small energy superpower in region.
The building of the hydroelectric power stations, - emphasized the premier- implies that Devolli waters that for centuries on end have caused more flooding than irrigation and have been poured worthlessly into the sea, become valuable and the energy peak expectations add to their value. This is my vision of the great energy potentials of the country and I shall do my best so that Albania is transformed into such a country. This work assumes a greater importance as it is located close to the capital and other big cities and turns into a major stabilizing electricity supplier, but even into a significant exporter when energy is most needed.
Premier Berisha said that 5 thousand workers will be recruited and 2500 others will be the support staff of constructing this building masterpiece in its genre as it plans 62 tunnels.
The premier emphasized that the concession with these two companies of experience in building, management, environment protection and energy field is a guarantee of success of this project, friendly to environment and based on the tunnels; it is not a project of decades, but of centuries because it carries the most advanced technology to save the potentials regarding sediments.
Premier Berisha said that thanks to this project Albania will benefit several other billions as the investors will be urged by the inviting news of a project based on 62 km tunnel built by the two best companies in the field of energy.
On his part, Economy Minister Ruli said that following the contract GoA signed with the Verbund AG electric utility other investors entered the Albanian energy market reflecting a crystal clear expression of the government of Albania policy that has constantly targeted to draw the investors attention of considering Albania not a country of investment risk, but a country of natural resources not yet exploited, the proper country of doing business.
