buna seara the Hungarians called all slavs ’tót’, who’s self designation was ’slovene’ or related. So todays slovaks, Slovenians, Slavonian Croats and the extinct Transdanubian Slavs. the word 'tót' comes from the Germanics and according to the Hun wiki it could be originally the self name of the Gepids (like cognate words can be find in other Germanic languages deutsch, teuton and so). Then a part of these Gepids assimilated to the Slavs during the era of Avar rule and thats why it became the exonym for the Slavs who live in the Carpathian basin. Then in the 19th century it started to mean only ’Slovak’. Here is a non Hungarian source So the word ultimately goes back to the proto indo european ’teut' 'people' starling.rinet.ru/cgi-bin/response.cgi?single=1&basename=/data/ie/piet&text_number=1115&root=config
