Milan Ivanovic05 May 2008 Belgrade _ A Kosovo Serb leader says he will file criminal charges against politicians who signed a key EU pre-membership deal.
The charges include, “treason, the acceptance of splitting the country, and jeopardising the territorial integrity and sovereignty, therefore committing an anti-constitutional act and a crime,” Milan Ivanovic, the head of the Serbian National Council of Northern Kosovo, SNV, said.
He claimed his group will sue Serbia’s President Boris Tadic, Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic and Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, all of the pro-European Democratic Party, DS, for signing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, SAA, with the European Union, last Tuesday. Ivanovic said that the signing of the deal, widely seen as the first step to EU membership, “has put at risk the interests of the Kosovo Serbs and their struggle to remain in the territory or to go back there.”
He also urged Serbia’s citizens to vote for “national and patriotic forces whose political priority is to preserve Kosovo within Serbia.”
Ivanovic, a close ally of caretaker Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and his nationalist Democratic Party of Serbia, DSS, said the charges would be filed “on behalf of the people.”
Kosovo Serbs, backed by Belgrade, oppose Kosovo’s independence, maintaining the former province is still a part of Serbia.
Ivanovic argues Belgrade’s signing of the deal is tantamount to its recognition of Kosovo as an independent state, since most member states in the bloc have recognised Kosovo’s February 17 declaration of independence.
