NATO "re-examines" Kosovo mission 1 May 2008 | 09:50 | Source: Beta BRUSSELS -- NATO has started re-examining its peacekeeping operation in Kosovo after the unilateral secession declaration, reports suggest.
The western military alliance's spokesman James Appathurai said in Brussels Wednesday that the ambassadors from the 26 member states have decided to discuss the 17,000-soldier strong mission, "in order to adjust to the development of the situation on the ground".
Appaturai said that the military leadership will use political guidelines to prepare a draft operational plan, "taking into account new tasks", Beta news agency said.
The NATO spokesman, however, did not make it clear what those tasks might be, but pointed out that "all that NATO does will be within its UN mandate and with full consent of the 26 members".

Re-examining does sound quite heavy and it would suggest a cut and run. I'm somewhat believing they will be there for awhile, they can't leave camp bondsteel, l'm thinking whether they may reduce troop numbers by replacing them with locals?

^ You will see the western nations taking young Albanian men to fight all over the world for them. At the moment the cost is huge for the government when a US serviceman dies in battle, whereas an Albanian will be cheap for them.

So you think the Albanians will be willing to go without actually being in NATO. Novi, I think your right, they are dumb enough to do that.

Or, there's that other tourist destination called Iraq. Has just as many extreme sports as Afghanistan.

Umm, are NATO looking to cut and run? No. They're trying to do what they did at the end of the cold war. With UNMIK set to end and no replacement for UNMIK after June, NATO wants to find a new excuse to stay in Kosovo. NATO was built to protect Western europe from the Soviet Union, meaning it should have been dissolved in the early 90s but it's still around. Once UNMIK ends, it should be dissolved -- but it won't be.

Fends, in all honesty, l'm worried about all the smaller nations joining NATO, just like what happened to the Aussies back in WW1 they were called to fight in Egypt while their masters the English were sipping tea on the beach enjoying the sun. I'm somewhat confident that the west will use Albanians in their global war.

It makes sense there is 60% unemployment and the majority of the population are young and of military ages..what a perfect recruitment scenario.

"It makes sense there is 60% unemployment and the majority of the population are young and of military ages..what a perfect recruitment scenario." Exactly.....just remember Vin the compensation payout to families lost in iraq and afghanistan is massive, this is hurting the US alot.
