Serbia won't accept compensation, Koštunica tells EU

BELGRADE -- Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica says Serbia will not accept EU compensation in exchange for Kosovo.
"Whoever intends and wishes for Serbia to be their partner must know that Serbia will only accept partnership as a whole, not a halved country," Koštunica pointed out Tuesday in a statement dispatched to Beta.
He also stressed that he expected the EU to respect Serbia's position that no EU mission could come to its territory, Kosovo and Metohija, without a prior resolution of the UN Security Council establishing a compromise solution for the status of the province.
"The arrival of the EU mission would mean the start of the implementing of Ahtisaari's rejected plan and the start of the implementation of unilateral independence. Serbia therefore rejects this illegal decision on the arrival of a EU mission in advance."
"The EU presidents and prime ministers at the Dec. 14 summit should bear in mind Serbia's position that any offer of compensation in return for Kosovo unilateral independence is completely unacceptable and insulting to Serbia's dignity," Koštunica said.
The prime minister told EU leaders it was "necessary for Serbia to be respected as any other free and sovereign state, which means that the EU must at least fully honor the country's internationally recognized borders."
"We believe it is useful for the EU to know Serbia's stance when it is deciding its destiny," Koštunica concluded.
At the preparatory meeting prior to the Dec. 14 summit, EU foreign ministers said the 27-nation bloc was unanimous in the position that a EU mission should go to Kosovo, while the "difficult and complex" resolution of the Kosovo status should be coordinated with the UN, the international community and Belgrade and Priština. "
" The truth is that even Albanians agree with everything this man has to say. He is working daily on our side. We wish him good health and a very long political career! With men like him, Kosova will get accepted in EU probably sooner than any Balkan state. We are going West Mr. Kostunica! Please, move out of the way!"
