Gambia Recognises Kosovo Pristina | 08 April 2009 |
Gambia ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gambia ) recognized Kosovo last night, becoming the 57 state to do so.
Located in Western Africa, the ex British colony’s population is 90 per cent Muslim.
According to Kosovo’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gambia’s recognition follows the latest meeting of Kosovo’s head of diplomacy, Skender Hyseni, with Gambia’s ambassador to United Nations, Susan Waffa-Ogoo.
“In a special meeting between Kosovo’s Foreign Minister Hyseni and Susan Waffa – Ogoo, on March 26, Waffa-Ogoo announced Gambia’s recognition of Kosovo”, Kosovo’s Foreign Ministryannounced.
Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on February 17th, 2008, and has since been recognized by 57 sovereign states, amongst them, 22 EU member states. www.balkaninsight.com/en/main/news/18008/

more news from Gambia Gambia frees witch-hunt detainees
1 day ago
BANJUL (AFP) — More than 300 people held in a government-backed witchhunt in Gambia have been released without charge after several detainees fell seriously ill, a senior police source said Monday.
Amnesty International and anonymous police sources said as many as 1,000 people have been snatched by "witch hunters" backed by armed men carrying out orders from the Gambian authorities.
They are forced to drink hallucinogen concoctions which caused some detainees to develop intestinal and kidney problems. Police sources say at least two people have died after drinking the potions.
"A total number of 312 people who were abducted by the so-called witch doctors early last month have been released in the early hours of Sunday morning without any charges levied against them," a senior police source, who preferred not to be named, told AFP Monday.
Their release came after five victims were admitted at various health facilities in Gambia suffering from kidney and stomach problems.
"Five out of those abducted are currently in hospital while others are seriously ill, and this prompted the authorities to release the remaining abductees before the situation worsens", the police source said.
Those released are mainly men and women aged 40 to 60. They were all arrested in early March.
Gambia, the smallest nation in Africa, has been ruled by President Yahya Jammeh who took power in a bloodless coup in 1994.
In recent years it has increasingly come under fire over its human rights record. Despite an international and domestic outcry over the witch hunts, the government has not responded to the allegations.
Observers say Jammeh invited Guinean witch hunters into Gambia after suspecting witchcraft in the death of an aunt earlier this year. www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5hCt2n7n-Blqw1CN4ZVQRmbF25s2A

So in retrospect, smallest and poorest African country (automatically means IMF and US dependent) where witch hunts reign supreme and not to forget undemocratic country with a dictator recognized Kosovo. What an accomplishment.

I strongly welcome Gambia(sp?) to our network of free democracies! (as Condoleetsa Rice would have said!)
Now seriously that means that KiM albs who wish to travel to Gambia or even work there are free to use their own made passport. Gambians should be welcome in KiM as well i guess.

Condoleezza...
Anyway, Gambia is not a country with any political leverage therefore it is not a greatly beneficial recognition. However, Kosovo has already the greatest powers on its side, making it a waiting game for the other countries to recognize it.

^Exactly. The countries that count have already recognized (Canada, US, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, UK, Australia, Scadinavian and Lower countries(NL,BE). Plenty of good places for KiM Albanians to travel to. ;D
What's left is African and poor Arab/Asian states... Some of these states are weak can't function but they hold a UN vote.
Kosovo now is fighting for numbers rather than political leverage which it already has. If whole Africa were to recognize Kosovo, it would be a UN member.

USA is the glue, once this glue weakens everything will fall apart, just wait and see.

USA is the glue, once this glue weakens everything will fall apart, just wait and see. That is something albanians fail to see. This whole Kosovo mess is a USA project. EU does not give a shit about it. Moment USA loses influence in Europe is the moment Kosovo "independence" becomes history and by the looks of it, it may come sooner than later.

The moment nord stream pipeline goes online in 2011, more then half of Europe's natural gas shall come from Russia and U.S. influence in Europe quickly starts fading. Nordstreams origin lie in the 80s, when the Russians wanted such a project but Raegan opposed it because it was the biggest threat top American influence in western Europe.

One of Russia’s main claims is that the pipeline will secure Europe's energy and not be used for political gains. Are you saying the Russians will use it as political leverage? Hm, in that case should anyone really support Russian decisions....

Who would have thought even just two years ago that the united states was going to be under an economic crisis. The country is in big trouble, there are people like soros who believes that the US will recover to experience growth very soon, l highly doubt this. Obama is off printing more money without having the gold to match, how can a bankrupted nation find more money to borrow, hence why his turning to a socialist agenda to enforce laws against freedoms. The kosovo project is a failure, they haven't succeeded with many recognitions, they also haven't brought jobs and prosperity for the poor suffering Albanians, its a hole that is going to explode because the criminal gangs who run the region have the power and will not allow social improvement.

I know the americans don't favor this, why would some of their puppets in poland or sweden cry loud about environmental issues just to screw with the project, just like dinkich regarding south stream. Seriously, l know leading european nations have completed extensive feasiblity studies to by-pass Russia but there is no other way than Russia. Geographically, Russia is even the best option for asian markets.

Who could of predicted this? Ron Paul. He was foretelling of a faster collapse of the empire for years. A few months after 9/11 he was pointed out the relaxations in interest and home loan rules was creating a bubble that would destroy the economy.
