What kind of name is Slava? Is it common Serbian? I met a man today named Slava and I asked him if he was a Serb. He was Russian.

I have never known a Serb to be named Slava and I dont believe it is used as a name in Serbia, it is a Russian name.

No, we have Slavko, Slavoljub, but not Slava. Slava is actually a word in Serbian, it denotes a family saint-day.
FYI, Slava is short for Vyacheslav in Russian.

It is a common short nickname for Slavic first names ending with "-slav", e.g. Vyacheslav, Stanislav, Yaroslav, Sviatoslav or Mstislav.
They're both Slavic linguistically.

Its the same meaning in all Slavic languages. You should see Putin's May Day speeches. He always begins with "Слава вам, и храбрым солдатам..." ("Slava vam, i khrabrym soldatam").
