Tirana advised before EU bidDuring a visit to Tirana yesterday, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis called on Albania to ensure that the country’s parliamentary elections are trouble-free ahead of the Balkan state’s bid to join the European Union. Speaking in the neighboring country’s parliament a day before Albania officially submits a request to join the EU, Karamanlis said that the June poll had to be carried out “in accordance with international standards” and with “respect to human and minority rights.” The Greek premier repeated the message to his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha during their meeting, underlining the EU’s concern about corruption and violence possibly marring the election. The leaders signed an agreement delineating the continental shelf and sea borders in the Ionian Sea and praised relations between the two countries. Karamanlis also held an unofficial meeting with representatives of the ethnic Greek community. www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_politics_100010_28/04/2009_106669

*Karamanlis is talking. Hears snoring from the Albanian delegation.*
Karamanlis: Are you guys sleeping?
*Albanians suddenly wake up*
Delegation: Umm, no, umm... you were saying something about *makes something up quickly* Socrates and the Great Hellenic mind?
Karamanlis: Yea, actually. Good job.
*Karamanlis continues talking, Albanians continue sleeping*

When the question in EU Parliament comes up "Is there somebody that disagrees with Albania entering Eu?"...... then suddenly you will wake up... fool of fear you will start stering Karamanlis in they eyes... and simlutaneously you'll try to remember what he was telling you in that meeting back then... Dude... you dont have so big balls as you would love to have so as to sleep when Karamanlis is talking. Whoever that is a PM of an EU country just talks.. and you follow. That is the game. The day your dream comes true... is far far away. Here is not Hollywood. This is real life with real EU....

I agree, Basil, the day Albania enters EU is far away. And if there is a god out there, and if he likes it, it will be even longer.... inshallah never... ;D
The EU already has its plans laid out. Greece is just another pawn in the whole thing.

I know filomen, Albania will simply get abused by the EU. But thankfully the way the EU is moving and expanding, it wont last long.

^ Toski, l kind of see the EU as a sort of USSR. I'm not going to comment on whether it will benefit Albania or not but for serbia's sake, she most keep away from it because the big fish will rape her inside and out. She must look up to her loyal friends.

Ba...i dont think the EU is the devil. The EU is so splintered that even if they unify after the lisbon treaty it still will be a confederate type of union with each country holding its own.
Thats what i like about it...so far EU has helped Greece and Cyprus. No doubt it will help other balkan countries as well.
Now if we are speaking about NATO...well then thats a different story...

I agree partially. EU is not a bad idea. Actually its quite good. But entering EU means loosing part of your Sovereignty. There are certain areas where EU has exclusive Sovereignty like the functioning of common market. That means the state can not do anything different than what EU says. For example, since 1967 member states CAN NOT conclude commercial agreements with third parties. Only the EU (to be more precise European Community) can. There are certain areas where EU and member states have SHARED competencies. That means states can act or decide smth ONLY if EU had not decided on the matter beforehand. Once EU decides, the states must comply with the decision. Such area is transport: for a long time EU didnt have provisions for transport. Till then the state regulated this sector with internal acts. But once a regulations were adopted by the EU, the states must change their laws in accordance with EU laws. There are certain areas where only states are competent to act, like culture etc.
