To what standard have the Mig29s been upgraded? I know these JNA Mig29s were some of the first production 29s and had not seen upgrades since like 1988.
If the Serbian air force is looking to replace its Mig21s going with current Mig29 variants would make most sense, since the infrastructure is already in place, and Serbian has a long history of using or building under license Russian equipment.

Well MiG OKB has overhauled 5 MiG-29's (4 MiG-29A's, and 1 MiG-29B, to MiG-29M and MiG-29UB status). Although a very good move, the Russians gave extensive discounts to the government of Serbia for this project. Seeing as the new MiG-29M2 project is attracting attention, I've heard the Serbian Ministry of Defense state that they'd get a batch of 24-32 for Air Defense purposes, but that is a long way from happening seeing as wages have been only now stabilized, and the Air Force has just separated from the Army (After being incorporated when SiCG launched the VKVSiCG programme). Funding is the main issue, but I think that how the Republic of Serbia is going, and depending on the rate the Kosovo Issue is solved, that shouldn't be a problem within a decade or so. But another Issue with the SRViPVO is that rookie pilots get less than 60 hours per year of flight time. That is a major issue that needs to be fixed and addressed, seeing as its neighbours with major Air capabilities, and their pilots, get 60 hours a month. That's a big difference.
