Two centuries of high education in Serbia 14 September 2008 | 18:04 | Source: Tanjug BELGRADE -- The 200th anniversary of university education in Serbia was marked with a ceremony in Belgrade on Saturday.
The University of Belgrade is an institution which, according to Rector Branko Kovačević and President Boris Tadić, "has links with the history of its people like few institutions do".
Welcoming the guests, including Tadić, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković and his cabinet ministers, religious dignitaries and guests from some 60 countries, Kovačević said that the Velika Škola (the Grand School), opened in 1808, while Serbia was still fighting for the liberation from the Ottoman rule.
The main task of the school was to educate state administration staff, in order to enable Serbia to make progress, he said and added this mission continued for two centuries.
Tadić told the gathering that the opening of the school was an exceptional event, which marked the beginning of the modern Serbian state's development.
"The degree of development of education has always been the best indicator of social, cultural and economic development and maturity of a country," Tadić said.

Thank the Austrians for keeping you out of the Ottoman Empire... It is apparent that he is just angry about the facts that he is a Turkish offspring and that Albania's education is non existent unless of course it is about women & drug trafficking. Don't worry, if you introduce an educational system now, then eventually you too might be able to catch up to the rest of europe which are only centuries ahead of you. No education and no economy, quite obvious why the yanks picked them as their puppets.

Education is the best weapon of Serbia. Great to see the history goes back so many years!

Serbia got this university while fighting to usurp Turkish rule. We developed our mental capacities while Albanians prolonged their tongues by eating Turkish ass for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have gotten so good at it that they did it to the NAZIs and today the Americans.

What? Are you gonna tell me that most major universities aren't funded by the state? ( through the extortion of taxpayers of course)
