what I wrote back then I watched the entire movie last night (which is Russian made with Serbian translator for serbophone audience).
Major points from the movie;
- Byzantium was primarily defeated from within (disunion) - Byzantium was death a fatal blow with crusader betrayal. - Byzantium naively looked up towards the West as brothers. - West (starting with Venice) started out big by usurping the City. - Byzantium was longest lasting empire or state (over 1000 years) - West was always individualistic and materialistic. - Early Byzantine state was an efficient well oiled state. - Byzantine state was economic and cultural global alpha and omega of its day. - The City was under constant attacks of barbarians. - Influential and rich dynasties spelled doom for Byzantium. - "Dynasties" refused giving needed money for City's defense against Turks. - In early middle ages nationalism tears fabric of old Romeic ident. - This nationalism (pushed by the west) splits apart Byzantines (new nation states of Serbia, Bulgaria emerge)

Very true observations AA
At one point, the Russian monk talks about the Greeks of 400 AD and how they simply didn;t want to live any more. How the Greeks almost vanished from earth. WHAT A CLUE.
It is a miracle i speak this language.
Also, he tells that by 1200+ (i dont remember) out of the 150 best intellectual men of Byzantine elite of spirit, only 25 got married and had children....
awesome clues..... The Russians/Serbs have proven that they bear the cross of Byzantium on their soldiers, since we greeks f**ked up.
BUT, and this is agreat BUT, the fact that hellenism is not dead, gives me hope, that some day we will be bright and happy again.

The (late) Byzantines also had a line of succession which caused a lot of pointless rivalry throughout the ERE because it was unfeasible. Too much bureaucracy and too many contradictory laws. Mainly because the Byzantines ended up trying to import the foreign ideals of Feudalism without getting rid of it's Monarchy.
